Translator: Flying Lines
Hearing his inglorious past coming out of his mother, Ding Sheng only grinned, casting an occasional glance at Chen An.
“Told you my family are nice. And they really like you.” After lunch, Ding Sheng took a walk with Chen An in the expensive-looking family garden. The talk at the lunch table went on well; Ding Sheng was glad he found no trace of embarrassment or displeasure on Chen An’s face.
“Sounds like you’ve had an interest in me for a long time. Really, I’ve wondered why such a young man like you kept coming after me for three years like a tail. I’m not the only arms trafficker out there.”
Ding Sheng was right. His family were nice: a gentle and open-minded mother, a considerate and fun sister. They helped change Chen An’s impression about family for the better. He’d never had such warmth.
Of course, the stories Chen An heard from them were also quite interesting.
“First of all, the primary reason for my running after you was the large volume of your arms deals. Apart from that…” Ding Sheng hesitated for a moment, licked his lower lips, and looking at Chen An’s face from the side, said with a softer voice, “I read your profile when I was still in school. Our teacher projected some videos of you onto the big screen, I don’t know why, but I remembered you since then.”
“Hmm, glad to hear your love confession.”
“I liked you before, still do now, and will continue to like you in the future.”
Chen An glanced at the beaming young man, “well, it’s your choice.”
Ding Sheng jumped happily like a bunny in front of Chen An. Walking backwards and with a confident smile on his face, he declared: “you will start to like me, Uncle Chen.”
“Don’t be so sure of yourself, young man.”
“I believe in fate, and luck, too. When only the two of us went into the dream world, I knew you are the one I’ve been waiting for.”
Upon hearing it, Chen An teased: “how old are you, to speak about ‘the one I’ve been waiting for’? Don’t be cheesy, it doesn’t suit you.”
“My mum taught me this. She said you would be happy to hear it.” Ding Sheng winked at Chen An, his big smile shining under the bright summer sun, “I will be always be by your side, An, whether you accept me or not.”
Having departed from Ding Sheng’s place, Chen An looked out of the plane window, at the sea of white clouds, layer after layer like waves, and said slowly: “you know what, Ding Sheng said he likes me.”
“Tut, tut, you have no scruples, Old Fox. How could you accept someone like him. Any time you need love, just tell me and I will give you lots of love!” Ivanov emphasized the ‘lots of’ to make sure Chen An would get what he meant.
Habits were a formidable force. In the past, when he had time, he would go mountaineering, to the clubs, or be a pilot and fly a plane…
Living in poverty was a terrible thing. Nevertheless, opulence also had its drawbacks.
His life lacked meaning; the only thing that kept him going was to make more money, and then more. Yet no amount of wealth could make up for the emptiness he felt deep down.
If it wasn’t for the untimely death of a rich friend, who overdid it and died in his pursuit of new thrills, the young Ivanov would have been like that friend, going after more and more fun.
And if it wasn’t for Chen An, the man who could make him feel he was in heaven one minute and in hell the next, Ivanov would have went on without realizing how lovely the world was, or how interesting life could be.
