A sunny morning and a new golden day for Belle. In a half-conscious state, she started gathering all her sprawled bed sheets as her mother's voice echoed in her ears.
"Yes mama, I am awake," she answered back her mother's calls.
Without sparing a single minute she rushed downstairs not before cleaning her room and stuffing the bed sheets in the washing machine just near the kitchen.
"Is this the time to wake up? You have to go to work and it is already fifteen minutes past nine. Be sensible, child. You are already 20," said her mother, flipping some pancakes.
"Yes, mama," she answered in a low tone, just like an obedient robot.
She quickly took a shower and rushed to the main hall, continuously rubbing her dark brown hair against the towel. Her chestnut brown eyes gleamed after she splashed water on her face.
"And today's breaking news, NASA has confirmed a giant meteor that will pass the earth's lower planetary orbit tomorrow at five in the morning. Chances are one in a million that it will collide with our dear planet wiping out our existence..."
Dad was busy with the astounding news about NASA's prediction and was the only person interested in the news until Belle stepped in.
"Hi, sis. Going for the job already?" Her brother greeted her as he feasted on his noodles.
"Yeah, the firm won't allow latecomers," she said as she handled one of her physics books in her hand while gobbling up her food with the other.
"Is your firm that strict? It's Sunday...Oh, come on! Can't you take a leave for a day?" Her sister joined the talk.
"Can't help. Sunday's the busiest day." Belle sighed.
"What's that book your reading?" asked her brother.
"Oh, this? It's the physics book of our college," she answered.
Her brother skipped down his chair and made his way towards her.
"Yuck! What a boring book it is! Doesn't even have a single picture." He scoffed.
Belle chuckled lightly. "Of course, these aren't like your elementary school books."
"Belle, do you still have time to chat with your brother? Come on, fast or you are gonna be late." Her mother's voice rang calling her from the kitchen.
"Yeah mama," Belle agreed half-heartedly.
"You are now working in a big firm, do they you good?" enquired her mother.
Belle suddenly felt quiet. She licked her dry lips while formulating an answer. She could never tell her. In her opinion, her parents expected too big from her.
"Yes mama, they treat me good," said an obedient Belle.
"They should be. After all, you are now working in a big firm." Her father winked at her.
"Yes dad," she replied.
"And Belle, I want to remind you once again. No reading of useless books. I have warned you and I don't want to have a second talk about it." Her mother roared as she slammed a blue-covered book on the dining table.
Belle's eyes grew wide at the sight of the book. It was her favourite book, 'The Dreamcatcher'. How did it turn out with her mama?
"I think I am clear enough, Belle. No fiction or story books," Belle's mother replied sternly.
Belle suddenly stood up and snatched the book and quickly pulled her back and strode fast till she came out of the house and slammed the door shut.
It was too much. She couldn't lie around every day to her parents. That guilt was eating her from inside.
"Maybe...the meteorite is going to crash on earth. It should be best for me." She mumbled as she started walking towards her destination.
Perhaps, she should change herself a little bit?
