I walk steadily down the stairs, clutching the railing. Each time I step, the steps creak loudly and I always have to take a breath. Can they hear me? Oh who am I kidding of course they can. Once I have made it to the end, I peek out of the corner of the wall.
"Boo!" I hear behind me. I jump back hitting myself on the wall. My best friend Shawn laughs.
"Shawn! Stop it! I thought you were in the kitchen!" I yell. He grabs my head and shakes it.
"Cmon we're going to be late to the party." As we walk down the road a loud piercing alarm goes off. I clutch Shawn's hand. Shawn breathes heavily so I feel his chest move up and down behind my back.
"What the hell was that?"
"How the hell should I know?"
A scratchy voice starts to speak. Then everything starts to shake.
I awaken to Shawn shaking me.
"A nightmare?"
I shrug and take steady breathes.
"You know, the world we're living in is already a nightmare so it's not as bad"
"Well, we are living in the zombie apocalypse"
I sigh. I scratch my head and think of everything that happened in the past few months. After a while I ask Shawn a question.
"Is this a test?"
He looks up and does his crooked smile.
"You think?"
"No"
Shawn lays back on his bed.
Right now we're living in a school auditorium. Beds fill the room. But the corner there is the door that no one dares to go near unless someone has the hour to shower or to go to the bathroom. But that's it. There is another door that leads to the Gym. That's were we eat. Yes I know, it should've been the auditorium but the beds would not have fit in the gym. Shawn starts to snore and I fall back into bed. I look up at the ceiling were the letters 'E' and 'P' are scribbled. A big space between the both letters. No one knows why they're up there or how they got up there but they chose to ignore it. I was starting to fall asleep once again when I hear the door open. I cover myself with my blankets and pretend I'm asleep. High heels click on the floor and then stop. Then another door opens. Maybe one of the lunch ladies. I look beside me and I see one of my other friends coming toward her bed which is beside me. When she's made it she shivers.
"I know you're awake, Kendall"
"You just got back from the outside"
"Not form the outside, form the showers! You know how cold they are"
"Yeah well. I wouldn't want to know."
"Too early to think about right?"
"Mhm"
After the conversation I fall into deep sleep once again.
