Delia's POV
*the next morning*
Well, 9:00 a is a ridiculous timing for an appointment. I'm so not ready for this... Neuroblastoma can affect any part of the body, but mine is in my lymph nodes. It always has been. They do x-rays all over to make sure it's not spreading, though. Although I'm supposed to be getting better, I kind of feel the same, like nothing has changed. Dr. Smith walks in, he's my favorite.
"Well, the x-ray results have come back. Delia, you're cancer free."
"I can't believe it, oh my gosh! Really?"
He nods. "I'm very surprised. Hopefully, this was our last round."
"Thank you so much." I start to tear up, and my mom does, too.
"Oh, and we have a surprise for you, Delia. Someone flew in."
I automatically think of my dad. I haven't seen him in over 3 years... He never calls anymore to tell me happy birthday, or ask how I'm doing, but maybe he's here behind that door, just waiting to see me...
The door swings open slowly, and Grant walks in with his guitar case... I can't believe it... Wait, why is he here? Never mind, I don't care. He sets his guitar case down and opens his arms for my embrace. I run up to him, and he catches me. I can't help but cry. He's carrying me, and he sets me on the hospital bed. He stands between my legs and cups my cheeks. He has the brightest smile.
"Why are you crying? Aren't you happy to see me?" Why would he ask that?
"I'm way passed happy. I love you so much, Grant. Why are you here? Wait, why are you crying?"
"I love you, and when the company contacted me, I had to say yes. I've been waiting over two months to see you... And you need to get better... You're really sick..."
"No, Grant... I'm not anymore. They just told me I'm cancer free." I say with the biggest smile on my face. Grant hugs me tight and I can feel his tears on my shoulder. He's so beautiful... He doesn't need to cry over silly ole' me.
"Oh, sorry, Delia. So you're okay?"
"I'm completely fine, Grant. Don't worry about me. Sorry you have to see me all ugly and bald. I have no ha-"
"No, Delia. You're absolutely stunning. I don't care if you don't have hair. That's not what makes you beautiful." He interrupts.
"Oh, thank you, Grant. I don't really know what to say."
"Don't say anything. Let's go out. We can do whatever: ice cream, movie, anything. I'll pay."
"No, no. I thought we were doing this in a couple of months when my hair grows back."
"Oh, trust me, we will." He pauses for a moment. "But, we're hanging out today, too. I'm making you."
"Well, it's only 10:00 am. There's really nothing to do this early."
"Breakfast?"
"Yeah, well there's that, too. I didn't think of that." We both laugh.
"Waffle house? I saw one on the way here." I nod in agreement.
We both get in the car, and my mom drives. We pull up, and he gets out fast to open the door for me. He's such a sweetheart. When we get inside he asks, "Can I sit next to you?" I just nod. How could I say no?
This is so surreal. I never thought he would surprise me like this.
"How are you doing? Are you okay, Delia?"
