Class 🐞

Me and Adrian were still making out when the bell rang. I broke the kiss and looked at the blonde boy in front of me, breathing hard. Hell, I was practically panting.

"Adrian, we're gonna be late for class. Cmon." I stood up and tugged on his sleeve, trying to get him up. "Nuuuuuu." He whined, and flopped his arm. "I wanna staaaaayyy." I tugged harder. "Well, too bad. Now get up."

He shot to his feet, surprising me and making me stumble. He grabbed my arm right when I was about to fall, pulling me close. "Be careful."

I searched his eyes with mine. Was he actually...caring? He let go of my sleeve. "See you in class." He walked away. I quickly started to follow him. I'd forgotten which class it was, but I remembered that we had every class together.

He made three rights and one left before he stopped in front of a door. I looked at the plaque next to it.

Science class. Great.

I was never good at science. It was the only subject that I was glad I could work at my own pace with, and that is been dreading.

"You gonna keep staring at the door like it's haunted, or are you gonna come in."

A voice pulled me out of my thoughts. A skinny black guy was in the doorway next to Adrian, both of them staring at me. "I-I wasn't!!" I must be related to Shakespeare with the graceful poetry that came out of my mouth.

I tried again. "Hi, I'm Marinette..." and then I remembered homeroom. "...and you already know that because you're in my homeroom. Great."

The black guy laughed. "I can see why Alya likes you. You're funny. So, I know you're name, but you don't know mine."

He swooped into a mock bow. "I'm Nino Lahiffe. I'm Alya's boyfriend." I laughed and rubbed the back of my head. "So you're Nino. You were all Alya could talk about in homeroom, and yet she failed to mention that she was your girlfriend!"

A ruler smacked the door and we all jumped. A wild looking woman with purple hair glared at all of us. "Were you planning on coming into class or just standing out in the doorway? Get inside!"

"Yes, ma'am." We all chorused. I took my seat by Alya, and Nino and Adrian sat in the empty seats behind us. Adrian sat right behind me, and Nino sat right behind Alya. The teacher started talking. "We will be doing a group project on volcanos. Four people will make up a group. You may choose who to work with. The materials and instructions are at your lab tables. You have until the end of class. Get started!"

Me and Alya turned around. "Hey, want to be partners?" We all asked together. I giggled. "I guess that answers that question, then." We walked over to lab table #6 and got the stiff out. We put on goggles, masks, and latex gloves.

Adrian pulled out the instruction sheet. He started to read them aloud. "Materials: 10 ml of dish soap, 100 ml of cold water, 400 ml of white vinegar, Food coloring, Baking soda slurry (fill a cup about ½ with baking soda, then fill the rest of the way with water), Empty 2 liter soda bottle."

We made the baking soda slurry, and measured everything that needed measuring. We were going fast! Much faster than anyone else. Adrian continued reading.

"Number one. Combine the vinegar, water, dish soap and 2 drops of food coloring into the empty soda bottle." I grabbed those things and put them in the empty soda bottle. Phew, it smelled nasty!

"Number two. Use a spoon to mix the baking soda slurry until it is all a liquid." Alya mixed the slurry. It looked cool, all fizzy and scientific.

"Pour the baking soda slurry into the soda bottle quickly and step back!" Nino grabbed the slurry and poured it into the bottle, stepping away quickly with Alya in tow. Adrian grabbed me and rushed back.

The bottle erupted. It was magnificent. I love doing it, especially with my friends. I grinned. "This was really fun. It was definitely a blast to work with you guys!" I realized what I said right after I said it. I had unknowingly made a pun. My cheeks grew warm.

Adrian laughed, and big, jolly sound. "Good one, Marinette!" Alya and Nino laughed too and, after a minute, I joined in. I didn't care that everyone was staring at us. It felt good to have friends.

An arm wrapped around my shoulders and squeezed me. I looked to the side and saw Adrian smiling an actual smile. "You did good today Marinette." A smile split my face. "Thank you, Adrian. You did good too."

So this is the end of the chapter but for all of you science fans out there, I'm going to write how the volcano exploded. It's down below. I found this experiment at www. sciencefun.org.

A chemical reaction between vinegar and baking soda creates a gas called carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is the same type of gas used to make the carbonation in sodas. What happens if you shake up a soda? The gas gets very excited and tries to spread out. There is not enough room in the bottle for the gas to spread out so it leaves through the opening very quickly, causing an eruption!
