We were finally off the plane after twelve hours.Twelve excruciating hours spent trapped sat in a cramped aircraft with nowhere to escape to or hide but the bathroom and back.
It felt like absolute hell.
I sighed as we - we being all of the passengers including my family and I made our way off the plane in an orderly fashion - My parents leading, me in between, and Izzy following closely behind me.
I had really thought that being on a plane would be exciting - seeing as it was my first time and it had been in the beginning as I was taking it all in - but we had travelled all the way from Greensboro, North Carolina to get here and now that we had finally arrived, I was tuckered out from the journey.
"How much further do we have to go? My arms are killing me." Izzy huffed for the tenth time since we had made it out.
Every couple of minutes she'd ask the same stupid question and it was starting to bug me, it didn't help the fact that I barely got any sleep on the plane due to her extremely loud snores, a crying baby, and a man with really bad loud gas.
Such an extremely horrifying experience.
"Maybe if you hadn't packed so damn much you wouldn't be in this predicament. Now please, for the love of god, shove a sock in—"
"We're here girls."
The sudden interruption from dad had me shutting my mouth as quick as it had opened. I felt not only a wave of relief wash over me but could feel Izzy's hard glare burning a hole into the back of my head.
As much as I loved her I could no longer stand to listen to her whine about how tired she was.
Dad had explained that his brother, Alejandro, would be the one picking us up.
He didn't tell us much about him.
Just that he was a very flashy, loud, very friendly, talkative man with a big family - a wife and five kids.
I really couldn't help but wonder what I'd even say the moment I saw my uncle. I'd never met him before - hell I wasn't even aware that he was still alive and kicking it until earlier this year.
Would it be right to even call him uncle or would I simply call him by his name?
I wasn't sure.
We entered the waiting area, very surprised to see the huge lineup of people holding up signs with their family names written on them. I wasn't too convinced that we'd be able to find him in the crowd - that is until I spotted a man who stood out the most of the bunch.
He was very handsome and the only one not holding a sign. He wore a dark suit with sunglasses perched on his head. His skin was a light golden brown - identical to my father's - and his dark hair decorated with light grey streaks was swept back neatly from his face.
He looked around for a bit before his eyes landed directly on dad. I tapped him lightly on the shoulder and pointed him in the direction of the man.
"Dad, is that Ale—"
"Giovanni!"
I jumped at the sudden interruption and turned to see him rushing over to us - or dad, I should say - with opened arms. Dad grinned and dropped his belongings before accepting the warm embrace that was offered to him.
I smiled and looked over at Izzy; my smile fading slightly as she eyeballed him with an all too familiar in her eyes. Almost as if she was undressing the man with her eyes.
Unbelievable.
Just as I opened my mouth to say something, mom beat me to it. "Don't you even think about it Isobel Liana Yuen." She whisper-yelled. Izzy blew out a breath and steered her eyes elsewhere, mumbling to herself about how unfair life was.
