"You can leave now, Hailey, but make sure you're ready with all of these files by Monday, we can't afford to make mistakes." Her boss warned her, leaving her alone with her thoughts.
Loosening her high ponytail, Hailey sighed as she silently entered her shared apartment. The week at work had been terribly brutal on her. Her boss had been extra hard on her since a new executive would be visiting early next week. She couldn't wait to just curl up in the comfort of her home.
She hated this job. All they did was exploit their employees, more specifically her, making them work overtime the entire week. She had decided she would quit once the month ends but the days seemed to drag slowly.
Her eyebrows scrunched up in confusion when her boyfriend did not come to greet her as per usual. Walking in, she found him in the kitchen, deeply involved in the video that was playing.
Is he baking a cake?
"Hey." Her voice made him frantically turn in fright.
"Oh, you scared me." His panicked expression was replaced with a warm smile.
"How was work?"
"Tiring." Ben leaned forward, catching his girlfriend in a warm hug and placing a short kiss on her forehead.
"Why don't you change, hm? I made dinner for us." She loved seeing his toothy smile.
It wasn't very often that both of them had enough free time to spend with each other but when they did, they cherished every second of it. It was as if time would slow down for the couple to spend enough time together before another busy week started.
Watching her disappear into their room, Ben turned back around to finish his dessert. He felt joy rush through his veins as he giddily imagined what was about to happen in a few minutes. His excitement masked the nervousness but he didn't want to dwell on it.
Turning off the video, he whipped out the ingredients required to make the icing just as the oven went off, signaling his hearty roast was finished. He let the centerpiece of his dinner rest as he continued to ice the cake the best he could.
His warm smile appeared back on his face when his sweetheart came back into the kitchen looking more relaxed in her sweats. She plopped herself on the counter next to him.
"It's smells delicious!" She closed her eyes, her mouth watering just at the scent of dinner, "what's special today?"
"Oh, nothing, just felt like eating something special with my special girl." Heat rose up to Hailey's cheeks. They had been dating for more than 4 years now but she still seemed just as shy as when they met. Ben stole a quick sweet kiss which made her cheeks burn more. He laughed at her cuteness.
"And it's done, let's eat!"
Ben easily scooped off Hailey from the counter and placed her on the dining chair gently. He quickly placed all the courses he had prepared, along with some red wine.
Hailey almost moaned at the taste of her boyfriend's cooking, immediately throwing a string of compliments and praises his way.
"Oh my, it tastes just as delicious as it looks!" She couldn't stop herself from digging into her.
"Thank you, sweetheart," he smiled at her, reaching out his hand to hold hers.
"No, thank you. I really needed some pampering." Hailey grinned.
"Before we get to dessert, I want to discuss something." Hailey nodded looking at Ben's serious face.
"I know we've been dating for over 4 years now and we've been through a lot of good times and tough times and it's not you but me who is mostly leading us into an argument and- baby, why are you crying?!
"You're going to break up with me, aren't you? Was this a goodbye dinner?" Hailey's face turned red as she choked on a sob, tears freely flowing down her face.
"W-what no!"
"You aren't?" She sniffled, her face making his heart hurt.
"Of course not, baby. I-I..." he sighed, giving up om his jumbled mind. He reached for his trouser pockets and gently traced over the small velvet box.
He pulled it out, sliding it towards her,
"Marry me."A fresh onslaught of tears poured down her cheeks, "y-you want to marry me?"
Ben simply nodded, understanding her shock but he wasn't ready when Hailey threw herself onto him. He wound his arm around her midriff, making sure she doesn't slip and fall.
"Yes, yes, yes! I'll marry you!" She laughed, wiping her tears off. He sighed a breath of relief, holding her close.
"I love you so much, Hailey, I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you."
"I love you too, baby." Hailey caught his lips, pulling him into a deep kiss.
Slightly pushing her back, he slipped the shiny diamond ring on her finger.
"It's beautiful." Hailey spent a good minute admiring her new ring before turning her attention back on her fiance.
"Celebratory dessert?" Ben offered a slice of the cake he baked.
"Yes, please." Hailey did not move an inch off of him, not that he minded.
"When did you plan all of this?" She asked, taking a bite of the rich, decadent chocolate cake that melted in her mouth.
Ben's ears turned red at the question, a common tell that he was shy, "about a month ago...but there was always something that went wrong so I decided it would be more intimate here with just the two of us." He continued to scratch his nape bashfully.
"I love you." She whispered, placing small kisses all over his face.
"I love you more, darling." He grinned back at her.
