"Will..." I say as I try to shake her awake at the sight of the bright sun.
"What?" She groggily looks up at me. Willow's not a morning person, but honestly I'm not much better.
"Today's matching day!" My voice reveals my rivaling emotions of anxiety and excitement.
After spending yesterday in the playroom, I know I was made to be a little. It feels so natural and I was actually able to enjoy myself which I haven't been able to do in so long.
"Faye, I'm so glad you're excited and that you got to have fun yesterday but we need to talk about us sticking together." Willow reminds me of why I have the anxious side. "We'll have to make them understand we're a package deal."
"I know. We'll work it out, we always do."
"You're right. Why don't we try and get there early so we can freshen up a little bit? They might have showers there."
I let out a sigh of relief as she speaks to my insecurities of our ragged appearances.
"That's a great idea." I let out.
We speak to the same front desk lady as before, who we learn is Mallory, and she leads us to the staff-only showers and bathrooms.
"I'm sure we can make an exception for two little girls on their special day." Mallory says sweetly but I see Willow freeze up at the thought of being considered a little girl. "And don't worry about your clothes, we always keep extra clothes on hand in case of accidents."
I just smile up at her as Will replies, "Thank you so much."
We both hop in the showers and as soon as we're both done and wrapped in towels, Will turns to me.
"That felt amazing." She says as her hair falls in wet curls down her back.
"Yeah, I forgot how refreshing it feels." I agree.
Just then, Mallory walks in and sets two outfits on the counter.
Willow thanks her again as I grab a baby pink knit dress and Willow takes a pastel yellow romper.
After brushing through our hair, we head back out to the waiting room and check in as it's now 2:50.
"I'm nervous, Will." I whisper.
"I know. We'll go in together, okay? And I'll explain our situation and how we have to stay together." My sister assures me just as a woman comes out.
"Faye Jones." She says as we both get up.
"We want to go in together please." Willow explains after the woman gives us a confused look.
"Sure. Mrs. Williamson is ready to see you now." She opens the door to reveal a woman in her early forties sat behind a desk. She has hair that's starting to grey, has glasses sat on her nose and a bright smile that helps ease my nerves.
"Hi girls. I'm Natalie Williamson and I'll be your caseworker for this process." Mrs. Williamson explains after we take a seat in front of her desk. "Why don't you talk to me about the two of you coming in together before I explain everything to you."
"We're twin sisters and we've never been apart." Willow begins. "We can't be separated. Whatever has to happen for us to stay together, that's what we'll do."
"Okay, so you two would like to be adopted together?"
"Yes."
"And I assume that's what you want?" Mrs. Willamson looks to me.
I nod.
"Faye doesn't talk to anyone but me for anxiety reasons which is also why it would make sense for us to stay together." Willow adds.
"Well girls, I think I can count on one hand how many times this has happened in the Matching Agency history, but for you girls we'll sort it out, okay?"
"Thank you so much."
"Okay, let me explain the first part of the process of matching to you, meeting caregivers! Over the course of this week, you will meet with lots of caregivers. You guys can talk, play games, do whatever you'd like in the 45 minute period. Now, a common misconception is that you must choose a caregiver this week, but you do not. You can take as long as you need to decide because this is a huge decision. However, if you don't choose by Friday, a temporary caregiver will be assigned to you to watch over and take care of you until you decide. Do you have any questions?"
"Um, I don't think so." Willow says and then turns to me.
I just nod in agreement.
"Now, is there anything specific that you're looking for in a caregiver like mommy or daddy, certain traits or habits? If you have any, we can alter the caregiver lineup and eliminate the ones you know you won't like." Mrs. Williamson says.
I lean into Willow. "I want a mommy." I whisper.
"Faye wants a mommy." Willow relays the information to Mrs. Williamson.
"Ok, we do have a couple of a mommy and daddy, would you be opposed to both?" Mrs. Williamson asks.
"That's fine." I whisper to Willow.
"That's fine with us." Willow repeats.
"Okay, good. Now, the first caregiver will be with you girls shortly but I will be having a conversation with each of them about there being two of you because that could change some things." Mrs. Williamson explains. "Now, you girls can go on in and get comfortable and play with whatever you like." She opens a side door in her office to reveal a pastel pink playroom that matches the dress I'm wearing.
Suddenly, this all starts to feel really real. Willow and I might meet our caregiver today!
Hey, just wanted to let y'all know that I will be updating once a week, right now I'm doing Fridays but that could change.
