I tried to scan my surroundings but all that I could see in the vague moonlight were the headstones and the last few memories the dead had left behind... and then I noticed her... an old woman perched atop of a tombstone not very far away from me. Her dress torn and muddy at several places.
Though still... she seemed strangely familiar.
As I walked towards her I saw her eyes wandering, stopping to stare at me.
Fear grabbed me as I approached her slowly. My question barely a whisper... "Where am I?" ... The short silence that followed was almost deafening... my mind swirled... my body trembled... afraid of the answer that would follow I couldn't think...
The old womans voice cracked, however her answer was as bright as day... "Amongst the dead my dear"...
My heart stopped, my stomach turned, my eyes shut and gravity took over... I was scared but not sure why.
It felt like falling in the dark... I felt alone and afraid and not sure what to do untill a faint sound stirred the darkness... someone was here... with me... but who... or what?
Adrenaline kicked in as something touched me. I opened my eyes in horror... the light inmediately blinding me... I had to blink a few times in order to adjust to the light. I groaned as a faint headache slowly made itself present.
"I'm sorry las but we've arrived" the coachman said with a slight irish accent. I slowly got up, still a bit shaky from the nightmare.
"Thank you." I said as the coachman helped me out of the carriage.
I stared slightly in disbelieve at the scene in front of me.
An old, overgrown and rusty gate framed by 2 huge stone walls. It would be an understatement to say that it didn't look inviting.
The sun was setting and the weather didn't help either as it started to drizle.
"Are you sure about this las?" The coachman said while handing me my bag. I nodded in reply but wasn't quite sure.
"Alright las. I wish you well." The coachman sighed as he walked to calm his slightly restless horses. I watched as the coachman and his horses took off and watched them as they dissapeared into the forrest.
Was I sure about this? I eyed the gates again unsure if I had somehow gotten myself into a horror story.
I made my decision as the rain picked up and grabbed my bag.
Bravely I pushed the handle of the gate and it screeched open. I walked inside suddenly feeling less brave as I looked around. The setting sun caused thick and dark shadows to form around the garden.
Although it must probably be lovely during the day due to an abondance of flowers, it well... the atmosphere started to change. Quickly I walked towards the large victorian mansion in front of me.
The gravel crunshing at every step. It made me feel uneasy.
My senses on high alert as if being watched.
I stopped in front of the large oak front door of the mansion.
I knocked as there was no sign of a modern doorbell. The old door slowly screeched open. It was unlocked.
"Hello?" I said unsure.
A small smile formed on my lips. How tupid. I knew... well I was quite sure no one should be here as my great aunt who had left me this place had recently deceased.
Though I was now the owner of the place I somehow still hesitated but not for long... lightning struck right behind me and I jumped inside.
"What the ...." I said a little shaken.
