—Second year in junior high.
"Look at him, he's crying." A squeaky voice giggled.
Hinata was pushed to the ground by an older boy, his bag falling off his shoulder and landing in the dirt. He flipped over onto his bottom from his stomach, looking up at the three boys who were harassing him. Tears formed in the corners of his eyes as he wrapped his small fingers around the strap of his bag, pulling it toward him.
"He can't hear you anyways, idiot." Another boy spoke up, slapping the one who first spoke on the back of the head.
Hinata was scared and confused. He watched their lips move, trying to decipher words. He managed to do it if the person was talking slow, but he couldn't understand what they were saying. He hugged his bag, tucking his knees underneath himself.
"What are you doing?"
The three boys flinched, turning around to see a taller boy with shaggy, black hair and deep blue eyes.
"K-Kageyama-san!" The another boy, the one who had not spoken up before, squeaked, smiling awkwardly. "We were just-"
"Bullying him! Wanna join us?" The first boy finished the other's sentence proudly, his hands on his hips as he raised his head.
Kageyama looked down at the orange-haired boy, who still was clutching onto his bag helplessly. Hinata's white uniform shirt was stained from the dirt and his eyes were painfully red from crying.
"No." Kageyama shoved his hands in his uniform jacket's pockets, clicking his tongue. "That isn't something to be proud of."
The three boys gasped silently, the second one clearing his voice.
"B-But-"
"Scram." Kageyama narrowed his eyes, stepping forward and leaning over the first boy. "You heard me, right?"
He gulped, looking up at the taller boy in fear. "Y-Yes.."
The trio didn't waste any time. They grabbed their bags that had been dropped on the floor and ran off into the field, practically jumping out of their skin.
Hinata wiped his eyes, trembling as he shifted himself to stand up on his knees. Kageyama looked over his shoulder, making sure the bullies were gone. He grunted to himself and walked over to Hinata, looking down at the frightened boy. Kageyama lended his hand, which Hinata gladly took to help him stand.
"I'm sorry that happened." Kageyama watched the other kids play in the fields.
Hinata slung his bag around his shoulder, brushing the loose dirt off of his uniform. He looked up to the dark-haired boy with a faint smile on his lips.
Thank you. Hinata signed.
Kageyama furrowed his brows, his calm expression changing into a confused one.
"What?" He tilted his head, backing up slightly as Hinata frowned.
Hinata kneeled down and set his bag in front of him. He dug through his bag, then eventually pulling out a notebook and a pen. He quickly wrote down the following words:
聞こえません。
(i can't hear.)
The blue-eyed boy widened his eyes, staring down at the notebook as Hinata showed it to him.
"Deaf?"

Before long, Hinata and Kageyama became average friends. They hung out at lunch and sometimes after school, having to bear the burden of communicating through a notebook since Kageyama didn't know how to sign.
Hinata's second year of junior high went along pretty smoothly all because of Kageyama. He actually enjoyed going to school after they became friends.
During the summer, the two would often hang out by the park nearby their junior high. Those days were the best Hinata had ever had. Until,
Kageyama stopped showing up to the park midway through summer.
This confused Hinata. He would continue showing up at the park, but still no Kageyama. Hinata became upset and began isolating himself away in his bedroom. He hardly ate and slept, causing him to fall into a mild state of depression.
Kageyama also never showed up to the third year of junior high.
Bullying became normal for Hinata again, but he began to not mind it at all. His eating became regular again, but he had a hard time sleeping.
Summer rolled by again, still no Kageyama.
Hinata still returned to the park everyday, remembering their small conversations and races.
Oh how he dearly missed his friend.

—First day of high school.
Hinata was sitting crisscross in his rolling chair, messing with his hearing aids at his desk. They were still new to him, so he wanted to figure out how they worked.
"Shouyou~" His mother opened the door to his room, catching her son's attention. Breakfast is ready. She signed to him.
Hinata nodded with a smile, attaching his hearing aids to his ears. Once his mother had left the room, he quickly got dressed in a white, buttoned down shirt and black slacks. He headed down the stairs, a wide grin on his face.
First day of Karasuno High.
Little did Hinata know, his old friend would be attending the same school.
