the deveraux ball
"Everything seems great," stated Joanne Deveraux while walking around the ballroom. She stopped a little to admire the decoration witches were putting up all around the room. Some with magic some with their bare hands. "Good job, Sophie. I hope my daughter will be as hard-working as you."
"Thank you, Ms. Deveraux." Sophie gave a small smile to the woman as she walked past her. She became her favorite in a short time, as Joanne liked the passion she had against the Mikaelsons. In a couple of days, Sophie managed to do what no one else had been able to before - earn the Deveraux witch's trust. In a little less than a week, she had become Joanne's right hand in every situation. She knew about every business that was going on in New Orleans, and she had quite an influence on the woman's choices.
Ever since their little adventure in the cemetery with Agathe, Sophie was able to get as far from the Mikalesons as it was humanly possible in a city that they had once ruled. Although, she heard words in the streets that the youngest brother had returned to the family too, and that he was even more vicious than all the other family members combined. Luckily, at that moment, she hadn't had the chance to meet him in person, and so she felt safe from the man.
Finishing up her parts of the decoration, Sophie noticed a strange man talking to Joanne, making her visibly tense. The witch's shoulders were held tightly, her chin cocked up so she could look at the strange man. He was wearing clothes that were appropriate for fashion, but he seemed rather uncomfortable in them. As if it was the first time he had the displeasure of wearing the deep black coat and the rounded hat, along with the walking stick that he rested his right hand on atop.
Taking a deep breath, Sophie decided to help the woman out, and she walked up to them.
"Is everything alright, Ms. Deveraux?" as the words fell off of her lips, she felt the man's glance at her, making her shiver at her spine. There was a weird coldness that his eyes left inside her. It was as if Death had laid a lover's touch on her bare skin.
"Of course, my darling. The mister was just about to leave." her voice suddenly became cold and secure while looking directly into the man's eyes. Sophie couldn't understand how was she able to hold his stare for so long as if she didn't have that odd feeling.
"It was a pleasure." nodded the man, looking yet again Sophie, one last time. As his eyes left her, she felt a slight relief from the cold. She just then realized that she had forgotten to breathe for a few seconds. Probably that's why the weird feeling. She was just lack of air.
But there was something about him that Sophie couldn't put her fingers on. He seemed calm, despite being surrounded by witches, and his posture was too sublime to be as old as he looked to be. He walked out of the room as if he had woken up from a deep slumber just now, still adjusting to the reality.
She was sure that he was a vampire. Just didn't know how old.
"Who was the man?" asked Sophie after a few moments, looking up to the pale Ms. Deveraux.
"He, my darling, was hopefully the only Mikaelson you'll ever have the displeasure to meet." A Mikaelson. So the cold feeling Sophie had felt was actually Death, that was coming from the ancient vampire.
Joanne took Sophie's hand and made her look into her eyes. "The Mikaelsons are dangerous creatures that we must fear, but we need help in our cause."
"I do not understand."
"Kol wants to leave the city as much as we want him to. But his family would never do that, as they claim that it is their home." Sophie had never heard the woman talk with such hatred, even about vampires. Her voice even stumbled a little. "So he sought an alliance with us, that we must keep - but only in our terms."
