"Yeah Starks I know your almost healed up but no you cannot come back anytime sooner...listen I understand this is hard for you to not be in the thick of things but right now getting you back to one hundred percent is the primary focus" said police sergeant Elise Mitchell who has to try and keep Starks from going crazy at home. Elise was recently promoted to being sergeant after the retirement of Douglas Sims who retired after twenty-three years, Sims handpicked Mitchell because of her tenacity and he felt the station could use a bolt of energy. She made levelheaded decisions and was very calm under pressure when she needed to be, she's no pushover which really won over most of the department. Obviously not all were so happy go lucky about her being selected, and it did ruffle some feathers that she was not intimidated by the typical macho bullshit.
Guys like Starks and Welch were two of the best allies she could have because of how much respect they had, once it was clear she wasn't going anywhere anytime soon, the noise quickly died down. The hustle and bustle of West Harrison Street PD was at at an all time high, even amongst capturing (albeit rather easily) their thief just a month ago. "Look at em...sitting there looking all smug" says detective Mark Jennings, Jennings referring to the perp whose actual was Adam Kirk. Jennings was determined to do all he could to solve the case and get something out of Kirk if possible, Kirk sat in the interrogation room with no visible expression on his face. Elise walks by and sees Jennings preparing to go in to interrogate Kirk, "I know this isn't gonna be an easy one given what he did to Starks, but I need you to keep your head on straight for this one Mark" says a concerned Elise. "You got nothing to worry about sarge, don't get me wrong this sonofabitch pisses me off... but I will keep my cool... you have my word on that" says a still rather upset Jennings. Elise gives him a look that says everything without saying anything, the look the means "you better" and "I kind of believe you", she was always good at saying something without saying anything at all. Mitchell walks away reluctantly as her phone rings, meanwhile Jennings is preparing to go in and interrogate the man who shot his partner one month ago. He gathers himself puts his weapon away before entering,
Elise having reached the end of her short phone call comes over to look through the glass along with two other detectives. This was a big moment and one that could potentially move the needle in either a bust or back to the drawing board. Jennings enters the room looking confident meanwhile Kirk still sits with no expression, "Comfortable?" says Jennings not really caring if he is or isn't. Kirk looks up but remains emotionless, "assault with a deadly weapon on an officer of the law, burglary, resisting arrest, and carrying an illegal firearm, quite a rap sheet there wouldn't you say?" says Jennings as a form of an ice breaker. Kirk remained silent as Jennings observes his movements and facial expressions (what little he can that is). "You lookin at a lonnnnnggggg time in prison there, rap sheet like this- ""won't matter" says Kirk who now utters his first words since he's been in custody. "Excuse me?" Jennings replies "it won't matter how much time I get in prison; I have no reason to deny what I did detective. Its an open and shut case after all" says Kirk in a what was a true statement but the amount of arrogance surprised Jennings. "Well, aren't you an arrogant one; ok then smart ass lets skip the run around and you tell me what the meaning of those notes are" says Jennings who's mood has turned from the calm demeanor he showed early on in the interrogation.
Mitchell was still standing by watching Jennings through the two-way window, she looked visibly concerned but she had enough faith in Jennings to keep his cool. "Every single house you rob there's a note saying I'm still around, now I want to know what the hell the meaning is behind it" Jennings says his voice calm but angry at the same time, you could tell he was pressing for information but he had to be careful not to press too hard. "That's a simple answer detective, the answer is I'm still around as you see me now and as you've seen me when you caught me. I'm still around as you can see". Kirk could tell he was getting under the skin of Jennings, he knew that answer would only bring more questions, and with more questions the more frustration was going to build up. "I'm not in the mood for the games and beat around the bush answers", Jennings takes out three of the notes that were taken from those crime scenes and laid them in front of Kirk. "Now these are three notes we found at different areas of your crimes; can you tell me why the writing is different on all three"? "Well detective there are two options here; one is I'm just that damn talented, and two is maybe there's more than just me that's STILL around". This was either a very big break or a massive mind fuck from Kirk, the latter is extremely possible because of the amount of times robberies would occur almost felt like they were pre-planned.
