Description

It hurts when a person you were once close with distances himself. Alaina Horton and Charles Myers used to be the best of friends but, somewhere along the way, they drifted apart. Now, their relationship doesn't exceed that of a noble lady and her bodyguard.

They've got one more chance to reunite. One last chance. If they don't take it, Alaina may very well have to lock away her feelings in order to marry another manfor the benefit of her land.

"Charlieee!" The little girl sported a toothy grin as she ran through the flowery field.

The ten-year-old boy crouched a few feet away, searching the grass with his hand. Upon hearing her voice, his head snapped up in wonder. Alaina picked up speed. But she didn't watch her steps and ended up face-first on the grass.

Her cheeks glowed a fiery crimson and she didn't dare look up in fear of his reaction. Why did she have to be so clumsy all the time?

Hands gripped her underarms and she didn't resist their pull. She watched, from the curtain of her blonde hair, Charlie's shoes walk around to face her. "Are you alright, Alaina?"

She looked up with pursed lips. Forsooth, she had managed a glimpse of a concerned expression on his face before his eyes widened. Gone was the concern, replaced by loud laughter as Charlie rolled on the ground.

Alaina pouted. He was laughing at her! Coughs erupted from him as he struggled to calm down. He huffed, clutching his stomach, and let out a few strangled laughs. She couldn't resist any longer: giggles escaped her.

Teary-eyed, Charlie sat up and looked at her. His breathing turned shakier, her suppressed giggles intensified, and both of them burst out laughing. Alaina's belly ached from the exertion and she had to lie down beside him to recover.
