BEEP BEEP BEEP
"Ahh!" I screamed, waking to the loud buzz of my alarm.
"Damn," I muttered and rubbed my eyes with my fists. My body felt heavy with exhaustion. Quickly I checked the time and groaned. Why did college have to start at fricking six o'clock in the morning?
Before I could fall back asleep, I kicked the covers off of my body. Immediately the cold air of my apartment sent a chill down my spine. I shivered and hugged myself in a futile attempt to stay warm. My grey Penn State sweatshirt fell to my mid thigh, leaving the majority of my legs vulnerable to the cold. Hurriedly I rummaged through my dresser drawer.
"Where is it, where... Ah! There you are." I yanked my black leggings out of the cherry wood drawer and slipped them on.
"That's better." I sighed. Now there was no way for the chilly Pennsylvania winter to get me. I grabbed my fuzzy socks and pulled them on, following with my black Uggs. Lifting my gaze, I saw my appearance in the mirror. My long black hair fell in loose waves to my waist. I pursed my lips momentarily before throwing my locks into a messy bun. My stomach growled and I gravitated towards the kitchen.
"Food..." I spoke in a zombie-like fashion. There was no separating me from my meals. The pantry opened and it was like a ray of Heaven shone down on me. I snatched the cocoa puffs and poured myself a big bowl before plopping down on the couch. As I shoveled a big spoon of cereal into my mouth, I flipped the tv on.
"And more on the Penn State murder." The news woman spoke. Cocoa puffs went flying out of my mouth and my eyes widened. What the hell?
"Oh my god." I muttered before fumbling for the remote and turning up the volume.
"Nineteen year old Brittany Dean was murdered early this morning at about two o'clock. Investigators have searched the area and Brittany's body and strangely have found no clues as to who might have done this. Her throat was slit, being the cause of death, but other than that our autopsy specialist has found no signs of mutilation. Many friends and family must be grieving at the loss of this beautiful teen." Her picture flashed on the screen and I immediately gasped.
I knew her. She was the girl who sat in the back of my math class and threw paper at me. Sure I didn't care for her, but now that she was dead I couldn't help but care. Brittany was one of the most popular freshmen on campus. Lots of people wouldn't be in class today I assumed. A memory flashed in front of my eyes of our last encounter.
"Hey Rae." She called as she walked up. Her shoulder bumped into me forcefully from behind, sending me crashing to the ground. A high-pitched peal rang from the mouths of her and her poesy. I huffed and tears burned in my eyes. Not-so-hushed murmurs and taunts rang out from behind me. 'Lazy slob' 'nerd' 'unwanted' 'loner' Their words stung. Brittany and her group walked off laughing and I took a deep breath before rolling my eyes at how stupid and childish that was. I picked myself up and brushed some dirt off my jeans before walking to my next class.
Who would want to hurt her? She was friends with everyone. My stomach churned and I placed my cereal bowl on the end table. After hearing the news there was no way I could stomach anymore... Even if it was utterly delicious.
