harry potter: marauders
muggle!au
tw: dead-naming and using the wrong pronouns (only because a character is still in the closet)He had spent the past five years pining after her, it was like she was forbidden, he couldn't touch her. She constantly sent glares and muttered curses his way. Her friends liked him, they helped him study for biology or had a quick chat with him between classes. It was a change of pace, most of the girls treated him like he was god's gift to them, him and his best friend. They wouldn't treat him like he was god's gift if they knew.
He figured he should distance himself from her, give her a break from the usual harassment she received from him. He'd ease out of it, one week he'd stop the winks and blown kisses, the next week he'd stop calling her 'his flower'. It would be a slow process, but his was longer. Hopefully she wouldn't notice, but she was also the smartest person in their year, so she probably would.
It didn't take long for her to notice, only about two weeks, which was surprising considering she usually paid more attention than that. He didn't mind though, it gave him a chance to breathe and think about how he'd tell her. He considered confronting her and telling her but he didn't want to seem brash so he wanted to wait until she asked him.
They were walking out of their second period maths class, it now being recess for the students. She usually stood far away from him while trying to leave but this time she stood beside him and grabbed his hand when the bell rang.
"What the-"
"For once in your life could you just shut up James?"
"Yeah, I can do that." He breathed out as she pulled him through the near empty corridors, stomping down the English stairwell and sitting under the stairs, yanking him down to the floor.
"Why on Earth have you slowly started to ignore me? And don't lie to me!"
"Well, Lily, it's kind of hard to explain... It's really private." James muttered, scratching at his neck nervously.
"You know I won't tell anyone, I'm not that kind of person. Now spill." Lily whispered, moving closer to James.
"I really don't want to tell you Lils, I don't want you to hate me."
"What would I hate you for? I'm sure it can't be that bad."
"Are you sure, promise?"
"Promise!" Lily's voice was cheerful, albeit being as quiet as possible.
"I'm actually a girl, I'm transgender Lily. I didn't want you to find me gross, you already hate it when I hit on you, what about a girl hitting on you? Isn't that worse than a guy hitting on you?" James was nervous, it shone through her voice as she stumbled over her words.
"Thank you for having the courage to tell me especially since I've been nasty to you since we first met. Would you like for me to continue calling you James or do you go by another name with the people who know?"
"Please call me Jamie, it's what Sirius calls me, it won't be as suspicious because I haven't told him yet."
"Why haven't you told Sirius yet, isn't he your best friend?" Lily whispered, moving even closer to Jamie.
"I'm scared about his reaction, remember who his family is?" Jamie muttered, leaning her head on Lily's shoulder, with her swiftly wrapping an arm around Jamie's waist.
"Sirius loves you Jamie, he isn't gonna care, regardless of who his family is."
"Maybe you're right Lils, I guess I was overthinking it."
"But you may think yourself as lucky." Lily said, looking Jamie in the eyes.
"Why? I don't feel very lucky at the moment, I'm just glad I told someone."
