Murphy's Law

South Park, Colorado

We were stuck behind yet another roadblock and turned onto a golf-course to get around it. I had refused to comment on Mack and Addy since they left. Of course, just as soon as we all stepped away from the truck, Z's came to us.

"Got the one on the right," Warren said, firing 10K and me right after, but we both ran out of ammo quickly.

"Look! Some clubs!" Cassandra pointed out, grabbing one while I drew out my sword, cutting down two more before Warren told us to run towards the "clubhouse," leaving Murphy outside as we hurried inside and locked the door behind us. As it turns out, it wasn't much safer inside the building than outside, with the group of Z's coming for us.

There were too many for 10K and me to take out with his sling and my bow, so we ran for the bathroom right behind Warren as she and Doc braced themselves against the door. But it was apparent it wasn't going to hold for long. Till we heard the sound of gunfire from behind the door, "You can come out now!"

A man's voice called out to us as we all looked at each other, "That was not Murphy," Doc shook his head as Warren added, "It wasn't a Z either. All right, get ready." I bounced on the balls of my feet, prepared to move as Warren pulled open the door, and we all walked out, weapons ready.

When we came out, we saw a group of three, one woman and two men. One of the men was older than the other, wearing a pair of dress slacks and a dirty jacket thrown over a polo shirt. While the younger man had a messy beard and sandy-colored hair, he looked like the trio leader. Lastly was the woman, a brunette with a scar on her cheek, and wore darker clothing than her companions. Strangely, she also wore a wedding ring, although she didn't seem to have that type of relationship with either man in their little group.

"It's okay. It's all clear." the leader reassured us, shooting a dead Z. The others put their weapons, down but I was hesitant to do the same. If I had learned anything during the apocalypse, it was that sometimes humans were worse than the Z's that surrounded us.

"Nice timing." Warren acknowledged them, nodding her thanks.

"Don't get too relaxed. There's still more outside." the woman warned, her grip tight on her gun.

"We got another guy outside too," Doc told them; I hissed lowly under my breath, wishing he hadn't mentioned Murphy. It would do no good if they found out exactly who Murphy was.

"I don't believe it..." they turned to go outside to help Murphy when they saw him out the window, golfing with the zombies paying him no mind. I clicked my tongue in annoyance; this was going to cause more trouble than it was worth.

We all went outside to greet Murphy back, "A little risky, don't you think?" the group leader asked him, referring to his golfing idiocy.

"No, the Z's love me. Who're you?"

"Brett Zimmerman, this is Henry and Janice." he introduced himself and his teammates while Warren turned to do the same. "Roberta Warren." She gestured to the rest of us behind her, "This is Doc, 10K, Cassandra, Mercy, and the fool with the jacket golfing with the zombies, that's Murphy." We all looked at him; none of us happy with the attention he drew to himself.

Murphy only smirked at Warren, saying, "You're just jealous cuz they like me more than you." 10K and I looked at each other, scoffing at Murphy's remark. We all retreated inside to talk Warren dragging Murphy in despite his protests.

We all regrouped to scavenge, but Zimmerman's group seemed awfully interested in Murphy after his little stunt as we all sat together. All taking a sip of whatever alcohol they appeared to be able to find.
