*huff huff*

Rolling!

Ashheart stepped lightly through the waving grass, careful not to step on twigs. He padded forward, the tall wheats masking his approach.

Yeah, I definetely dont want any trouble today, yesterday that chocolate furred tom I ran into wasn't so friendly......

Suddenly, Ashheart's nose twitched from the scent of a plump grouse. He swiveled his head to see the gray bird not so far away from his hiding spot, pecking in a clearing. Ashheart dropped his haunches and began to stalk the bird, closer and closer, unaware of his own stalker.

He got within a tail length of the bird before it clucked and turned to see a two basil colored cat eyes.

They both froze.

"YAAAAAAR!" Ashheart leapt towards the grouse who fluttered up in alarm, scaly legs kicking Ashheart in the snout. He missed the grouse by a feather, claws scraping in thin air.

Ugh, I should have just stayed still and stalked closer!

The graouse fluffed up its feather and pecked at Ashheart's face leaving feathers flying everywhere. Then it sped away through the grass.

A feather landed on Ashheart's bemused face. He sighed in frustration, then a voice from behind him rang with laughter.

Ashheart whirled around to see a sleek tortoiseshell meowring with laughter.

The she cat was definetely not from his clan. Ashheart backed off slowly, sheathing claws, forcing himself to raise his hackles and flatten his fur with false anger.

Ashheart wasn't normally a hostile cat, but he was on border patrol and it was his duty to protect the borders between Flowerclan and Lightningclan.

The she-cat turned towards him and blinked with surprised at his raised spine. Then her face slid back with a grin. "Calm down, spiky, I'm on the other side of the border."

Ashheart's fur settled and he looked down. "Oh. So you are."

"But OH STARCLAN, you should've SEEN your face! You looked like a tiny KIT!" she mewled with laughter again doubling over. Ashheart's heart warmed at her melodious laughter ringing through the air

He stared at the Flowerclan she-cat's sleek fur. She came up coughing with laughter and caught his eyes on her. Ashheart quickly looked down, but she grinned at him and bumped his shoulder.

They both just smiled in comfortable silence.
She broke it. "So on patrol huh? I'm Petalnose. You are?"

"Yeah I'm on patrol." replied Ashheart. "And I'm Ashheart."

"I suppose you're a lightningclan cat?"
Ashheart nodded in response. He was dumbfounded by this new cat he'd never seen before.
"I-I just dont believe, how, friendly you are!" he blurted.

Petalnose looked confused for a second, then understanding. "Why wouldn't I be?"

a clucking interrupted them. The two cats turned to behind Ashheart. The grouse was back.
Petalnose smiled. "Watch and learn, little kit."

Ashheart was about to retort, then had a better idea.

He watched Petalnose drop and slink quietly through the grass, like a snake. He was mystified by how fluid and slithery her stalking was.
