Chapter Two
// My soul is empty and full of white girls -Slaves // ( Its a song I swear )++++++++++++++++++
The dinner table was quite tonight.
It was the kind of quite that made you want to bang pots and pans yodeling profanaties at the top of your lungs. Alec stirred his peas in rythmic motion while glancing over at me with a unreadablle expression. I hadn't spoken to him since our argument. Not even after we'd finished our aptitude tests.
The test.
To say I was confused was an understatement. It seems as though i once again failed which is not a suprise. The dark haired women with tattoos covering her tan arms had read my scores to me with an glint of worry in her eyes. I was suitable for Candor.
And dauntless.
And Euridite.
Id looked at her as if she were insane. Everyone and I mean everyone only belonged to one fraction. " You're Divergent " her voice echoed in my mind. And so did her warning.
I glanced at my mother carefully cutting into her plain slice of chicken breast. How exactly do you tell you're parents that you don't belong?
Dad was finally the one to break the silence." Did you two finish your chores? "
Alec finally looked up from his plate. " Yes sir "
Dad nodded in approval before looking over at me with a look of concern. "Athena are you feeling ill ? you haven't touched your dinner"
I almost confessed that, no, it had nothing to do with my physical state but more my mental state. But I simply shrugged my shoulder and muttered a low " I'm not hungry". He studied me closely before speaking again.
" Does this by any chance , have something to do about the incident at the city hall " Alecs fork clattered loudly as it fell out of his grip.He shot me a worried look.
I remained silent. This is exactly what I knew was bound to happen. There was no doubt that filthy Candor went to the council to complain. Dad gave me a look of dissaproval waiting for me to explain myself. He was apart of the city council and everytime I scwered up it reflected on him.
" He asked for it " I retored. This of course, was not what he wanted to hear.
" Christ Athena, why must you always make these irrational decisions. Its like you don't even think before you act "
I lowered my gaze to my untouched plate. Plain bread. Plain meat. Plain vegtables. Plain Plain Plain.
" You weren't there, he ca-"
" I don't care about what he did, it was uncalled for and not something an abnegation should do " he snapped. Mother placed her hand lightly on him.
" I think she gets it" Alec defended. I looked over at him signaling him to stay out of it. Dad met his hard gaze and then stood up from the table. " I have to prepare for the choosing ceremony. Clean up when you're finished " with that he left the table, his tall frame dissapering behind his office door. Once again silence filled the room.
" He's just stressed out about tomorrow" Mother spoke softly hoping to relive the tension. She then stood up from the table excusing herself and making her way in the direction dad went.
And just like that, I lost it.
I rose from my seat quickly, accidentally bumping my knee against the table with enough force to make me see stars. In the midst of pain and anger I snatched my glass of water without thinking and threw it against the kitchen wall. I watched as it shattered into millions of pieces and sunk to my knees gripping my head in attempt to keep me from going insane.
Alec was instantly at my side, pulling me to his chest. He smelt of freshly cut grass and aftershave.
" Why do you do this too yourself little sister" he murmered into my hair and held me tighter. I gripped his forearm wishing that I could just dissapear.
We stayed that for what seemed like hours. Neither of us wanting to accept the fact that I never belonged here.
And I never would.
