The barely awake man laid, half dreaming, against the rough sheets he had now spent three weeks between. The consistent foreign beeping that came with one being in a hospital had become a sickening form of comfort, grounding him in each dream he'd experienced throughout the weeks.
But finally, a switch had flipped inside of the man. And his body had decided that it was time for reality to seep its way in again. And as he was finally able to take a peak at life again, Taehyung was utterly dumbfounded by what he saw.
His consciousness was still shaky, fading in and out as his brain slowly began to piece together where he was and what was happening. He almost felt as though a hard chunk had been split from the working part of his brain.
A creak could be heard from the end of the room and, for the first time since arriving, Taehyung was able to sleepily veer his head to the right, to find light mixed with the distant sound of oddly familiar sounding voices seeping their way in.
"Now before we go in, just so you aren't startled and don't scare the patient," the kind woman's voice that he had slowly become familiar with, despite his lack of consciousness, soothed Taehyung's worries, "There may be some slight memory loss. It's perfectly normal. For the most part it's only short term, and lasts three to four times longer than the coma did. But I do have to warn you, there is a tiny chance he will suffer from amnesia."
'Amnesia.' The thought jumped from vein to vein around his body. Fragments of memories fell around Taehyung's head and glided past his eyes. Sure, everything seemed to pass by in such a flash so that none of it could be pieced together. And there was a chance he could not remember the names attached to the voices that spoke so worriedly outside of his room. But their faces would surely spark something, right?
The door finally swung open in its entirety, making way for two rather foul-smelling men who looked as though they had just returned from war to glide their way in. Disappointingly to him, seemingly no one Taehyung knew had come to visit him. He frowned in distaste at the two strangers who stood before him.
The slightly taller stranger's eyes folded together, his thin lips turning upwards.
"Taehyung!" his unnecessarily loud scream stabbed at Taehyung's ears as they struggled to adjust to typical sounds once again.
The man carelessly unlatched hands with the shorter boy, who trembled in fear. Despite being the one just waking from a coma, Taehyung felt more sympathy towards the shy boy who shook in the corner than to himself. His feet turned inwards, if one looked closely enough they would observe his knees wobbling. He was slightly crouched, causing him to appear even shorter than what Taehyung assumed was usual. He stood, frozen, watching as the other man began to interact with Taehyung as if they were old friends.
"Don't scare us like that ever again, Tae!" Jimin rested his head firmly against Taehyung's chest, exceedingly excited by the sound of his best friends heart beat.
He tightly squeezed his Tae, almost cutting off circulation, but not having a care in the world. Information acquired. Taehyung actually did know these two men.
"I'm sorry if this seems rude," Tae finally spoke up as Jimin let go and sat awkwardly around his friend's feet, "But where do I know you guys from? Old school friends?"
In the moment, both Yoongi and Jimin's immediately thought, 'he's joking.' Jimin's turned back to lock eyes with Yoongi, and they both watched as the other slowly began to lose hope, their hearts beating more slowly, their faces drooping, their biggest fears becoming their reality.
Yoongi finally stood up tall, clearing his throat and traipsing his way over to his confused friend with soft footsteps.
"You," he took a second to audibly gulp, almost unable to utter the question that would confirm whether or not their fears had indeed become their reality, "You remember BTS, right?"
The room froze instantly, not only in time but in temperature. Scared droplets of sweat were forming on both of the boys' foreheads, their hearts yearning for it not to be true. But their brains reasoned too heavily, and they were fully aware that the worst was about to come.
"Is it some sort of government group?" Taehyung crinkled his nose as he shifted himself to sit up, "Is that where I work?"
His eyes were so full of hope, his face presented so pure, his cheeky grin making its first appearance since he had awoken. He truely believed that he had remembered something. It seemed almost cruel to tell such a hopeful man that he was wrong, especially considering all he really wanted was to impress these boys who seemed to be his friends, and to prove to himself that he wasn't losing his mind.
A dark shroud covered the already dark room, and a silence fell across the three boys as none of them were sure how to respond. Their prayers were answered, however, when a light knocking at the door alerted them to the presence of the doctor.
"Okay, we have two more people here to see Taehyung and we need to get them through quickly so we can give him a proper check up," she gestured passive aggressively, signalling for the boys to make room for Namjoon and Jin who waited excitedly at the door to visit their newly awake friend.
"That's okay," Jimin stood up, his eyes entirely open and his thin smile hidden once again, and began to awkwardly shuffle his way out of the room.
"I think we should talk to you about something anyway," Yoongi gestured back at the doctor before waddling out behind Jimin.
Finally, the door closed on the other three, leaving the two parents of the group alone with their baby.
Jin sighed and left a reassuring peck on Namjoon's cheek before slowly stepping his way over to Taehyung's bed and taking a gentle seat on it. His fingers found their way to Taehyung's forehead, gently tousling his ratty hair and lightly massaging his temples.
"You've been like my little brother since debut," tears formed a barrier between Jin's eyes and Taehyung's confused expression, "I was so scared when I heard, Tae. I love you so much. And I don't say it enough."
Taehyung's eyebrows furrowed, and Namjoon tilted his head towards the boy. Why was he not responding to his elder? There was a moment's silence, before Tae finally decided on what to say.
"Can I borrow your phone?" without a word to the man pouring out his heart in front of him, the bed-ridden boy stared hopefully up at Namjoon.
Both hyungs thought it odd that the first words Taehyung would utter to them after so long were, 'can I borrow your phone,' but he'd been through a lot, so they let it slide.
Namjoon whipped a phone from his pocket with a reluctant hand before typing in the password and holding it out for the younger member. Tae snatched the phone and Namjoon watched over his shoulder as he went immediately to the internet.
The leader eyed his phone as Taehyung typed in the letters 'BTS.' Perhaps he simply wanted to catch up on what he'd missed? It became obvious this was incorrect, however, when photos of the seven boys appeared on the screen and Taehyung gasped.
"I did it!" his eyes immediately brightened and, suddenly, he was entirely awake, "We did it! I'm famous!"
He yelled out across the room, rendering his two elders absolutely speechless. There was no way, was there? Could Taehyung seriously have forgotten...
"We're idols!" he cried out, "That must be how I know all of you! According to this, we're BTS!" his body trembled with excitement, lightly shaking the bed.
He stiffly sat up further, before wrapping his arms comfortably around Seokjin, squeezing the older member slightly.
"I'm sorry I don't remember you," tears now welled in his own eyes, slowly dripping onto the back of Seokjin's shirt as Tae rested his head on his hyung's shoulder, "But thank you."
