Brooke's POV
"Brooke!" I hear my grandmother call from downstairs. I roll over to look at the clock on my nightstand. 6:00? Shit, where did the time go? I still have to shower and get ready. I check my phone and I have a text from my best friend, Lillian, saying she's on her way. I groan, laying back down on my soft pillow.
"Brookie! You need to wake up!" I hear her yell again, louder this time.
"I'm awake!" I yell back, rolling my eyes. I drag myself out of bed and make my way to the bathroom. I strip off my sweats and step into the shower. It's burning hot but it feels good and I stand under the water and let my muscles relax. Grabbing the shampoo, I quickly wash my hair and body and shave my legs before turning the water off and grabbing a towel.
I walk across the the hall to my bedroom and see Lilly sitting at my vanity doing her makeup. 6:15. Wow, she got here fast. I drop my towel and slip on a sports bra and shorts. As I grab a bottle of lotion and lather it over my body, I look over at Lilly. "Hey."
She looks up at me and smiles. "Hey Senior. Excited for tonight?"
"Of course, you?" I say as I run my fingers through my hair. And I mean it. But I'm definitely more excited for the fall, when college starts. Lilly and I both got accepted into University of Missouri (or Mizzou), our first choice, with full scholarships for soccer. I was the captain and Lilly the co-captain during our Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years of highschool. It really is a dream come true spending the next four years with my best friend.
"I'm super pumped." She giggles and checks the time. "We should probably get ready though. We don't have much time." I nod my head, we only have half an hour now
After multiple curler burns, makeup remover wipes, and dress changes, we're finally ready to go. My flat hair is now curled to and my makeup looks decent for once. All thanks to Lilly, I look pretty good. I choose my favorite black dress to wear while Lilly went all out with a sparkly gold one. What was the point of that when it's going to be covered by an ugly robe anyway?
I make my way downstairs carrying my robe and purse, while frantically searching for my keys. Lilly follows behind, attempting to apply lip gloss as she walks in 4-inch heels. I find my keys at the bottom of my purse and turn around to make sure Lilly is still coming. I see my grandparents are sitting at the kitchen table and I walk over to tell them goodbye.
"Bye, dear. We'll see you there." My grandmother says as I kiss her on the cheek. She uses her fingers to lift my chin up. "You look absolutely beautiful," I blush at Grandmas sweet words. "And you look stunning, Lillian."
Lilly blushes as well. "Thank you, Mrs. Matthews."
"Bye, grandpa," I say hugging him goodbye. "See you later afterwards."

I sit in my chair tapping my foot, impatiently waiting for my name to be called. I look over to the parents section and see my grandparents. They wave to me and I genuinely smile back. But as I look at the proud parents, I can't help but wish mine were here. I always thought they would be here for everything I went through. My first day of kindergarten, my graduation day, and especially my wedding. Well, I guess nobody gets everything they want.
"Brooke Matthews." I hear Principal Gunn say, breaking me from my depressing thoughts. I slowly rise from my seat and make my way to the stage. He shakes my hand and hands me my diploma. I already feel older and free. As I stand next to everyone else, I look up to the sky at the clouds. Mom, Dad, I did it. I hope you're as proud of me as Grandpa and Grandma are. I love you so much and I miss you more than anything.
After everyone is called, we throw our caps in the air, cheering. Glad to finally be done. I hug Lillian tightly, as well as a couple girls from the team, then go to find Grandma and Grandpa. I see them towards the back talking to Lilly's mom and run to hug them.
"We're so proud of you sweetie." Grandpa says, kissing the top of my head as Lillian comes up and hugs her mom. I look over and can't help but be angry that her dad didn't even bother to show up. He's such a douche anyway, he would probably show up drunk and cause a scene. I push the rude thoughts aside as Lillian takes my hand and grins.
We walk to my car hand-in-hand. Still shocked that we just graduated high school. I without my parents, and Lillian without her dad. But at least we have each other.
"Brooke." Lillian looks at me.
"Hmm?" I say, starting the car.
"We did it."
