It’s nearly dark out. The sun is about to set, and it casts a breath-taking display of colors. I look up at the sky, and I listen to our footsteps as we walk. More trees start to surround us and I know that we’re getting closer to the park. I can hear Harry humming, and I start humming too.

The park is only illuminated by the light posts, giving us barely enough light to see. Harry stops and sits down on the grass, right underneath one of the light posts. I sit down next to him, and shiver. I rub my hands on my shoulders and Harry takes his jacket off.

“Here,” he says and drapes it over my shoulders.

“Thank you,” I mumble.

“Anything for you,” he says and I smile.

“You’re so cheesy.”

He puts his hand over his heart, and pretends to be offended.

“I’m just being a gentleman.”

“You’re really something, Harry.” I laugh and lie down on my back.

It’s pitch black now, and the stars fill the night sky. I remember the one time when my mother took me out to a field when it was midnight. She told me not to tell anyone; for it to be our little secret. I was so excited because I never got out of the house much. And in my eight year old mind, being out of the house after bedtime was a big deal.

I remember my mother’s sweet voice as she told me to lie back just like I am now. She told me to look up at the sky and try to connect the stars to see what shapes I could create. I remember every second of that night. It was so special to me, and my mother knew that very well.

There was one thing she said that really stood out to me.

*flashback*

“Close your eyes, Diana.”

“Okay,” I say, and close them.

“Now, do you  still see the stars?” she asks.

“Yes,” I reply.

“Do you know why you can still see them?” she asks and I shake my head.

“Because you don’t need to have your eyes open to see beauty.” she says.

*flashback ends*

She only took me back to the fields one more time after that. It was two days before she died. I wipe the tears off my face, and I didn’t even know I was crying.

“What’s wrong?” Harry asks, looking genuinely concerned.

“Oh nothing,” I sniffle, “just memories, that’s all.”

He pulls me close to him, and I breath in his masculine scent. His body is warm, and he rubs my back gently. For some reason, I start crying harder. Maybe it’s because I miss being hugged, or maybe it’s because I miss having a life. I feel like everything was taken away from me, and when I met Xander, I feel like he was a gift given to me. A source of happiness.

“Tell me about yourself,” I say, and Harry looks surprised.

“There’s not much to tell.” he says in a monotone voice.

“What do you mean? Everybody has a story, what’s yours?” I ask and he shakes his head.

“I’ll tell you some other time; I want to get to know you better.”

“Umm okay. Well, it’s more like a pity story. My life isn’t exactly great.” I say solemnly.

“It’s alright; tell me everything.”

“I have always been the outcast. Nobody ever liked me, and they always made fun of me. My mother was the only reason why I smiled. She made me feel like I wasn’t worthless. But after she died, everything fell to pieces. The girls at school started bullying me more, and hurting me whenever they could. Everything was just so horrible. But thankfully, I didn’t have to go back to school, because you came into my life.”

Harry is gaping and he stutters with his words.

“I’m so sorry about your mom, Annaliese.” he says.

“It’s fine, I’m used to people leaving me.”

Harry kisses my lips softly, and he holds me tighter.

“I will never leave you; I promise.”

And after so many terrible things, I trust him.
