I slid the straw into the cup. I don't like drinking coffee without one. It yellows your teeth, and I want my teeth white as can be. I wouldn't mind if not for my parent's total disapproval of teeth bleaching. I wasn't surprised when they said no though, they say no to everything.

I strapped into my seat belt. It was junior year. I turn 17 in October, and even though my parents bought me a car almost a year ago, this is the first year they've actually agreed to let me drive myself to school (or anywhere really).

I pulled into the parking lot and took a deep breathe. It was still hot since it's just late August, isn't that still summer? I don't know, I just know it's always summer in Texas. Shorts in November isn't uncommon. I draped my bag over my shoulder and headed into the school. Today's outfit includes a longer type of bustier that comes right above my belly button. I'm wearing high waist-ed pants so I'm not dress coded, with these cute Nasty Gal heels I got. I'm not one for labels, but that doesn't mean I didn't squeal at some of the pricey name brand presents I've gotten at Christmas. My mom's sort of a "shop-o-holic" even if she's not shopping for herself.

"Erica!" I heard from across the commons. It was Hannah, one of my best friends. She had long brown hair, green eyes, and dimples. She was gorgeous. And she wasn't average white girl. She was definitely the cool one out of us. She's the one who introduced me to Lana Del Rey and she's the one who made me get a Tumblr. She's the one who wears cheetah print fur coats to school she buys at the thrift store, along with a short Urban Outfitters sundress. Honestly, she's my goals. I haven't seen her all this month because she's been on a cruise, but I'm probably about to hear all about it.

"Erica, oh my God. I have so much to tell you." Exciting, since literally nothing has happened to me exciting over the summer except I flew to the Grand Canyon for a family vacation. Exciting, huh?

"I met this guy."

"I'm sure you did."

"His name was Jonathan, he's a dream! He actually lives in Texas! Waco... but close enough, I guess."

"Well I'm happy for you," I said, as genuine sounding as I could.

"Oh I'm sorry, did your parents confine you to the prison known as your room?"

"They don't force me... I choose to sit at home. There's no one I want to see anyways." When she scoffs, I add, "except you guys!"

"Yeah okay. I know I get boring. You need a guy."

"Just because I'm a woman does not mean I need a guy. Men are just time fillers, not necessities. I'm perfectly content by myself."

"Okay? What fun is content? And you don't necessarily need the men, just their little friend."

"I don't need any more friends, Hannah."

"You know what I mean," she said, sliding her hands down her body and moaning.

"I know! Stop! Stop!" I yelled, grabbing her arms. She laughs, and when the bell rings, I grab her schedule from her pocket.

"We only have Child Development together? We took all the same classes!"

"Actually, I dropped all AP. Last year was too hectic, strippers don't need AP Calculus on their resume. They don't need to see my D's in AP History and Pre AP Chemistry, just the ones under my shirt." She teased. I stuck my tongue out at her.

"Some of us have higher hopes for ourselves. And even if I wanted to, my parents would never allow it."

"Screw them!"
