I stared at myself in the mirror. I decided to look as cute as I could, so I shuffled through some Spotify playlists while I went through my closet. I wanted something that said "adult" and not "sixteen." I decided to wear my favorite of Hannah's dresses since she left it at my house, and it was perfect. I sat in the mirror for probably an hour, painting, shading, and contouring my face before I felt like I was finished. I rarely wear a lot of makeup because I don't really need it to be honest. But today, I think I look the best I've looked in a while.
I stepped into the hallway confident. I was a little self-conscious about my heels since they made me around 5'11. This isn't a teen movie though. I'm not a walking cliché that took off her glasses and made the whole school stop and look at her. I just look a little better than normal, and I'm proud of that.
"Erica, you look hot," Hannah said, spotting me from the end of the hallway. It made me uncomfortable that she yelled that down the hallway but I rolled with it.
"Thanks," I laughed. "It's all fake though. Took me about an hour and a half this morning," I said, spinning around to show her a 360 of my outfit.
"Cute dress? Where'd you get it?" She grinned.
"Hush," I laughed.
"While we're here, show me this gorgeous man of yours!" She said. It had just come to my realization she had yet so see Mr. Cooper. I walked her up stairs and from down the hall pointed at his room.
"You aren't coming with me?" She asked.
"Um no? What if he saw me? How adult is sneaking around to show you how cute he is? Now go look at him!" I whisper yelled, pushing her forwards.
"Okay... Okay..." She remarked, before walking down the hall. When she got to his room, she just walked in, looked at him, and walked out. I started laughing when she walked up.
"He's so hot," she said. Her mouth was practically watering.
"Well I called dibs so," I pointed out.
"All is fair in love and war."
"Sure," I laughed. "I'll walk you to your class."
My first period was AP English II, so I had it every day. I walked in confidently, with both headphones in listening to some feminist rap station.
"Hey," Tabby said. "You look so cute. Where'd you get that dress?" She asked in awe.
"It's my friend Hannah's," I smiled.
"Hannah Brown? She always dresses so cute," she cooed.
"Yeah, I know." I said.
I walked to my desk when Mr. Cooper walked in. He walked to his desk, sat down, and started to type. I took this as my opportunity to talk to him. I slowly walked up, and when I got to his desk he looked up at me. His eyes immediately sent a chill down my spine.
"Mr. Cooper, I was just wondering, what was your favorite novel? You never told us," I questioned.
"To Kill A Mockingbird. I had to read it in school when I was younger, and it wasn't a hard assignment. I really liked it. I've read it since several times. I always notice something new," he chuckled.
"Yeah, I totally understand what you mean." I smiled.
"You do?" He asked.
"Yeah, I mean, when I was younger I
always tried to read above what I was supposed to. Throughout school I've reread several books I read when I was younger and I always find something more. Sometimes it's details, sometimes it's a deeper meaning. Even now, I always find new and more interesting things," I say."Exactly," he smiled. He was looking at me. I could tell he was really looking at me though, like a person and not a student.
He breaks his stare, and heads for the front of the room. I walk back to my desk.
"Today, we will start our first reading assignment, Romeo and Juliet." Everyone sighs before he says, "I know. Teen romance, tragedy, everything you guys love, 'but' right after this we will be reading Macbeth and Caesar and those are a little more macho," he smiled, obviously trying to appease the guys in the class.
"Yet, there are things to appreciate in Romeo and Juliet. As much as I love macho, I'll admit to being a fan of the star-crossed lovers scene. The story is heartbreaking, but that's what makes it fun to read."
"He's so hot," Tabitha whispers.
"I know," I moan.
"Do you see how much he looks at you?" She nudged me.
"Shut up," I laughed.
"I'm serious! Watch!"
He did look at me quite a bit. And every time he did, it had the same effect. He finished talking and walked to some students to talk to them about the assignment.
"Look at his butt," she says.
"I know, so tight and cute. Who cares. Neither of us have a chance. He's a teacher," I said sadly.
"If he wasn't though..." She started.
"Ugh I know, he's a total babe. And he's smart, too. And funny."
When I heard chuckling behind me, Tabitha and I turned around in unison.
"No, keep going. Don't mind me," Mr. Cooper smiled from his desk.
Oh no.

"So, to take your mind off this, I got us these," Hannah says, walking me into the room with her hands over my eyes.
I knew Hannah got something stupid I wouldn't use, but all I could think about was how her hands smelt like lotion and they were greasy against my face. I wanted them off. When she finally removed them, I saw two ID's on the bed. One had my yearbook picture, with the background smoothed out so it was plain grey, and one had her's.
"This is actually cool," I said. "Too bad I'll never use it."
"Too bad you're too scared to use it," she added.
"My parents would kill me, and what opportunities do I have?"
"We could make opportunities."
"My parents would kill me, and you're right. I'm too scared," I laughed. It was true. I'd never even been to much of a party, what was a club or a bar in comparison?
"Me and some people are going to that place down town," she said casually, walking across her room.
"Thrive?" I asked. I wanted to go so bad. Me and my parents would drive to the shopping centers down town and every time I passed it, the lights beamed and I always knew I'd go one day when I was old enough.
"Yeah, and I know how much you want to go," she replied.
I thought for a moment, before I came to my mind."No, I can't. I have other things to do, and my parents would never let me."
"I didn't even tell you what day it was. It's Friday night, and lie. Think about it, okay? You know I've wanted to go too, and I want to go with you," she smiled.
Clubbing? I couldn't... Could I?
