It had been a whole year since they had come back from the hospital, and Draco was getting ready to take Harry on a date that he knew could change their lives forever, for the better or for the worse. He patted his coat pocket, making sure the box was still there before walking out of his room.
Draco remembered how Harry and he had met for the first time.~Cue song~
(Flashback)
After a month of staying in his house and only going out if necessary, Draco had finally gone to the nearest bar with the aim of getting trashed.
That's where he had run into Harry who was drinking alone at the side. As if his feet were working on their own accord, he had walked up to the boy and leaned against the wall next to him.
"Bad day?" he asked. "A few bad days is more like it," Harry replied, chuckling bitterly. Now of course Draco knew that it had been the night Harry had finally gotten to know what Ginny Weasley had been doing when she blew him off.
"I know that feeling," Draco said.
Harry raised his glass and said, "To bad days.""To bad days," Draco repeated, and clinked their glasses together.
They had danced together after that for as long as they could, and drank. A lot.Draco rubbed Harry's back as the latter threw up into the toilet. Then after cleaning up, he looked up at him and smiled. The smile was contagious and Draco smiled too, a real smile.
They had almost kissed but Draco had pulled away at the last minute. He had been so scared of the current that passed through his body and the emotions that filled him up when he looked at Harry. The green eyed boy asked him to stay over, but Draco didn't trust himself. He wasn't ready to let go.
(Flashback over)
Draco smiled at the memory. After that it was as if fate kept pulling them together. A few days after that, Draco lost his job and couldn't afford rent. He couldn't ask his parents for money, see the whole disowning issue. In the end, it had been Harry's advertisement in the paper that led him to his new apartment.
It had been hard for Draco to trust again, and Harry had been amazingly patient.
Harry had told him about how his parents had died in a car crash when he was an infant, he had lived with his aunt and uncle since. They made him do all the household chores, and even beat him up as punishment.
Draco took time to open up, but finally told Harry about his abusive father and how he would hit him whenever he got angry at even the smallest things. His mother would just sit by and watch, not daring to say anything. About how they had kicked him out when he came out as gay.
He had finally learned to let go again, and it had all been due to Harry. The boy had come into his life at his darkest moments and lit him up. He had been the one to help Draco fight his depression every single day, though he did it unknowingly;just by giving him one of his beautiful smiles or carrying him to bed when he fell asleep working on the couch.
He never got irritated with Draco's sudden panic attacks like Blaise had sometimes. He held him through them all and then got him a steaming cup of hot cocoa or whatever Draco wanted.
Draco didn't feel scared of letting go anymore, and he hoped Harry would never let go of him either, because he wanted to grow old with Harry. That's why he knew this proposal was more than just asking Harry to marry him. It was Draco asking him for a promise of forever.
The two men were having dinner at the restaurant Draco had chosen, and Draco was becoming more and more nervous by the second. It must have been showing on his face because Harry asked him, "Dray, are you okay?"
"Yeah, I am fine," Draco replied, maybe a little too quickly, but Harry, who had never been very observant about those kinds of things, thankfully didn't notice.
After the two were done with dessert, Draco stood up and got down on one knee in front of Harry. He looked up at the raven haired man who was smiling, his emerald green eyes wet.
Draco took a deep breath and began to speak, "The night we met in the bar was the first time I felt a positive emotion in a whole month. I knew then that I was falling in love, but of course I didn't let you see that. I knew I wanted you, needed you in my life, but I played it cool because I was scared of letting go. Now, I know that I want to grow old with you, that I will not let us part till Death, that I will love you as long as there is air in my lungs and a beat in my heart. I just want you to say that you will never let go."
Draco paused to take the ring box out of his coat pocket and opened it to reveal a plain gold band.
"Harry Potter, will you marry me?"
"Yes. Yes I will," Harry said, smiling the most beautiful smile Draco had ever seen.
Draco got up and kissed Harry deeply, conveying his love through it, before slipping the ring onto Harry's finger. That had easily been the hardest thing Draco had ever done. But it had also been the best moment of his life, because he had known from that very first night at the bar that he was falling, falling like the stars, falling in love.
