You quickly found an empty seat by the window. As fast as you could, you shoved your carry on bag into the small compartment above your head.
"Please buckle up. We will be taking off shortly." said the all to happy flight attendant. But you complied.
"Is it okay if I sit here, Sweetie?" you spun around, half expecting to see Nicky, but instead saw a middle aged woman with hair the color of a raven. She reminded you of Alex. Oh, how you wished to joke around with him one more time! The woman looked at you kindly, and, silently you nodded. Carefully, she maneuvered herself so she didn't bump the man a seat across from you. Thankfully, she was able to grasp that you wern't in the mood for lively chatting. So she settled with talking to the burly man beside her about how her adorable kitties were waiting for her back in Korea. He looked barely awake. 'Is she going to ramble on about this for fifteen freaking hours?' you asked yourself, lightly massaging your temples. This was going to be a long flight. And no matter how hard you tried, you could not tune out her high pitch babbling. Grumbling under your breath, you pulled out your battered iPod. Shoving the earbuds deep into your ears. You shuffled through the many play lists, not looking for anything specific. Finally you found one that was perfect. Slowly Pink's voice filled your mind.
'I don't wanna be the girl who laughs the loudest
Or the girl who never wants to be alone
I don't wanna be that call at four o'clock in the mornin'
'Cause I'm the only one you know in the world that won't be home,'
OK, maybe it didn't quite fit the moment. But it reminded you of Alex. His under age drinking. His smoking habit. His anger. His endless pit of sadness. But most of all, how he just wanted to be accepted. You had downloaded this song as soon as you had heard it on the radio in his car. You let a small smile slip onto your face. He had blasted the music. So loud the glass on the Ferrari's windows vibrated. And he had let his beautiful voice fill the empty air. That was something you had understood about him. He had the most amazing voice, yet he would never let anyone hear it. Only you. And because of that, you felt privileged. Closing your eyes you transported yourself to that time in the red Ferrari. Alex's voice replaced Pinks,
'I'm safe up high, nothing can touch me
But why do I feel this party's over?
No pain inside, you're like perfection
But how do I feel this good sober?'
You could almost feel his presence with you now. And with that sweet memory replaying itself in your mind, you drifted off to sleep.
~~~~***~~~~
"Miss?" you bolted up. One of the flight attendants gently shook you. You glanced around, some of the other attendants were waking up the other people who were still sleeping. "Miss, we will be landing in Korea shortly. Do you need anything before we land?" you shook your head. After a few minutes, you were able to clear your mind of most of the grogginess. Something slid from your grasp. You lunged for it, and you caught it, but in the middle of your daring save, you hit your head on the seat in front of you.Trying not to wake anyone else up to abruptly, you kept the swearing to a minimal. Glaring at the battered iPod, you rubbed the sore spot on your head.
"Hello! We will be landing shortly, so please stay seated and enjoy the rest of your flight!" There was the stupid, happy all the time flight attendant. 'How can anyone be that happy this early in the morning. Is that smile glued to her face or something?' you stared at the blond girl as though she had just grown a second head.
