"Long ago, when we were not free,
And death looked down on you and me,
A human fell down from the sky,
Into the flowers that lay by."The underground was empty. Since the last few monsters moved out, there was no more laughter, no more tears. The underground, which had once been home to so many hopes and dreams, held only numbness.
In the throne room of the once mighty Dreemur Castle, golden flowers twisted and turned as they fell softly to the dusty floor. Their lively, dancing figures proved a stark contrast to the monster that sat beneath them, his phalanges tracing the name etched into the gravestone that stood solemnly at the centre of the room.
"The human wandered through the land,
While making friends both small and grand.
But each time their SOUL tore apart,
Those flowers grew, poisoned their heart."Red tears dropped down off the Monster's face, splashing onto the cold, stone floor beneath. For a few minutes, this was the only sound that could be heard - then, the Monster rose onto his feet. He smiled fondly at the grave, even as his eyes welled with tears.
For so long, he'd put this off. For so long, he'd hoped for the first time in his life that there'd be a RESET, that she would come back.
Now, he was done waiting.
"Wherever she went, small or wide,
One Monster would stay by her side.
Soon roses bloomed between the two,
But both knew that they would die, too."Step. Step. Step.
Through the Hotlands. Through Waterfall. Through Snowdin. Into the Ruins. With each place that he passed, the Monster couldn't help but think of her. Her smile, her face, everything about her filled him with a warmth unlike any he'd gotten from anyone before, even his brother. And yet at the same time, she filled him with pain too, so much pain that he felt as if though his SOUL would split apart at any second.
He just had to make it a little further. After that, he wouldn't care.
"Soon time went by as it will do,
Her flowers thrived, and more ones grew.
They blocked her lungs, they blocked her air,
Her Monster friend could only stare."The Monster hadn't even realised that the sky had begun to darken - he must've been walking for hours. He could've used a shortcut, but at this moment, he couldn't care. Nothing mattered anymore, except for her. And now that she was gone too, the Monster couldn't feel anything anymore.
He reached the doorway and stepped through. A field of golden Flowers greeted him, their petals shining healthily in the evening light. The Monster had to clench his fists to stop himself from ripping them from their stems, one by one. It just wasn't fair. It wasn't fair that she was gone, while the Flowers still thrived.
It just. Wasn't. Fair.
Cutting a wide circle around them, he walked towards the doorway on the far side of the room. This was where it all began.
And this was where it would all end.
"It was fate - the girl had to die
So that monsters could see the sky.
They left for the world they had pined,
Only one Monster stayed behind."It was time.
The Monster stood before a patch of bright golden flowers. They seemed to call to him, but he knew that their innocence and beauty was nothing but a feeble mask to hide the true poison hidden underneath.
Step. Step. Step.
The Monster looked up towards the ceiling, bathing in the light from the world outside that flooded into the empty room. Memories echoed in his head - memories of Grillby, his brother, but mainly of her. He was ready to see her again.
Taking one last step, the Monster threw himself at the Golden Flowers.
"The Monster cried deep in that place,
He just wanted to see her face,
Off to the Flowers where she'd lied,
He laid in them-"The pain was more than anything he'd ever imagined. It ached, burned and tore at his very SOUL, and yet still, the Monster kept a smile on his face, for he was going to see her again, and that was all he could've ever wanted.
He could feel the vines snake into him, grasping onto his limbs, crawling through his ear, squeezing the marrow out of his bones. And yet still, he smiled. He smiled, and then he grinned, and then he laughed.
As he laughed, a white light erupted in his head. It was burning hot and yet icy cold at the same time, and it enveloped his body in a warm sheet. And then, he saw her.
She smiled at him, and he started to cry again, but this time they were tears of joy, for this was all he wanted. This was all he'd ever wanted. She tilted her head and began to cry as well, the flower crown on her head slipping as her head bobbed up and down. The Monster noted with satisfaction that the Flowers on it were white, not golden.
She stretched out a hand towards him, and he knew that it was time.
"-and then he died."
Sans stood up and took Frisk's hand.
