The Mikaelson Sisters

Prologue

It was 1255 BC and war was raging outside the sturdy walls of Troy. It has been going on for 5 years and at that current situation, no one could predict the outcome, some even say it might even last forever. Alexis and Elektra's childhood were destroyed over the years as like many other children of Troy, fatherless, consumed in fear. Alexis, being the elder child, learned to care for her half sister, as their father had never showed them much concern, leaving Elektra's mother, Agape, to ensure their well being. Luckily, although Alexis was not her daughter, she treated her like her own.

Their father had passed away when he was called to defend the city. Agape was struggling daily to provide her beloved children with food. Everyday, she would wake up before dusk and make her way to the city square to collect the daily rations, noticing the quantity gets lesser by each week. As war continues, food got scarce, the people now had to pawn valuable items in order to survive. Agape found herself in a very desperate situation, the house was almost empty. She has to find a way out of this, they cannot survive much longer. She thought of this as she exchanged the last valuable item she had, her mother's necklace for that day's ration.

As she was heading home, she passed an old man in skin and bones wearing rags, shouting randomly at passer-bys, "We are doomed! Hector had passed, food is gone and soon the enemies shall penetrate the walls! Pray to the Gods but they will not answer, help yourselves and hope that the Devil will have mercy on you!"

These words were carved into Agape's head. She looked around her to see the once glorious city was now filled with misery, the roads not swept, children starving in the corners, warriors with hopeless expressions and lifeless eyes, the people were no better. 'Hope the Devil will have mercy on you', an idea suddenly flashed through her mind. It was not a good idea and was unsure if it will even work but it was the best she could come up with and at that state, she just had to try. Agape quickly scurried home to make the preparations.

Alexis and Elektra had just awoken from their slumber, they waited in their rooms as usual for their mother to bring back the food. Their stomachs had been constantly growling throughout the night as they were never once fed enough since Hector, the Prince of Troy and the best fighter in their city, fell on the battlefield against Achilles. "Will we still get food tomorrow? We have nothing left. What are we going to do?" Concern and fear flashed through Elektra's eyes. "If that is true then I shall go out and help mother tomorrow. I don't care even if I had to steal, I will get you food. Do not worry dear sister, I will make sure we survive this mess," Alexis reassured her sister.

They engaged each other in conversation about their dreams to pass time. Alexis and Elektra each dreamt of acting and singing in front of a large audience. They had performed together regularly as street performers before the war, earning some spare change to help make ends meet. It was a huge surprise that many complimented them on their talent, thus, they honed their skill regularly, each achieving near perfection.

The sun hung high in the sky, notifying the sisters of the long time that had passed. The sisters started to worry as their mother should have been home by then. Elektra stood up and said, "I'm going to the kitchen to see if mother's there." She left her sister on the floor and exited the room.

Elektra was very afraid of running out of food, she was afraid to starve and die a painfull death. All she wanted now was that her mother and sister could live an easy life with no worries. She hated the war, many of her friends were not so fortunate and had went flying to Hades' rather flat bosom before the death of the great Hector.

Elektra neared the kitchen and she heard her mother's voice. She was instantly relieved and was about to call out to her when she realised that her mother was speaking to someone. Curiosity filled her and she slowly crept towards the kitchen like a mouse.

'I summon thee with intentions of forming a contract........I wish that my children and i shall go into deep sleep until the war ends and that both my children are able to protect themselves.......That Elektra shall receive the power......With my soul.....Thank you.'

Elektra was unsure what she heard and was very confused as she was quite sure there was no one else in the house but she shrugged it off and entered the kitchen. "Mother you're back! Was someone here just now? Who were you talking to? What were you saying? Did you get food? Did that person bring food?", Elektra rambled.

Agape, a little startled at the fact that Elektra heard her but later relieved when Elektra seemed clueless, and replied reassuringly, "Not now, I'll tell you later when we are done eating. Come now, call Alexis to join us at the table."

Curiosity was bursting out of Elektra while she munched on some stale and mouldy bread. She could not hold it in anymore. Elektra's wall of resistance was gradually crumbling, "Mother, can you tell us now who you were talking to?" she finally blurted.

"What are you saying sister? What's going on?", Alexis asked her Elektra and her mother. Puzzlement written all over her face.

Agape took in a deep breathe, looking at them intently, she began to explain the idea that she had, " As you know, we don't have anymore valuables to pawn for the food. So an idea came to me when I was walking home. It was not a good idea but, it was our only choice," turning to Elektra, " What you heard just now was me.....making a deal with the Devil."

At this, both childrens' eyes widened slightly. "Mother, you do know the Devil's dangerous, yet you risk yourself and summon him? That was a very bad idea, people say that making deals with the Devil is going against Apollo himself. Anything is better than getting involve with Him." Alexis argued.

"Like I said, there wasn't any other better solution of surviving this war. So I made a deal with Him that we will go into deep sleep until the war ends, that way we won't starve, and we won't die if our enemies manage to penetrate the city. And after the war ends we will wake up and Elektra, you will receive powers so that you can protect you and your sister. I tried to bargain for both of you but it was too much for the payment...."

"What payment?!", Alexis and Elektra both demanded.

Elektra asked again, a little less aggressively this time, "Mother, what payment?"

Agape sighed and replied, "In order to make the deal, you need to give Him something in return.....I gave Him.....my soul."

Alexis and Elektra's jaws dropped at hearing that, their faces whitened. Anger flooded Alexis, "How could you do that?! Your soul is now bound for eternal punishment! I'm sure there's another way. Call the deal off mother! We can't lose you too. How are we going to live by ourselves...alone...."

Alexis could not bare the thought of Elektra and herself, stranded by the streets without their mother, their only family they had left. However, a voice in her head stated the fact that there was no other solutions they could think of right now and it was the only chance that they could be free from the war they so despised. She found the logical side of her agreeing with her mother and the side ruled emotions howling in disagreement.

Alexis could not comprehend why her mother would do this for her, after all, she is not her real daughter. Gratitude filled her to the brim as she gazed at the woman who sacrificed herself to save the treasures of her heart.
