Heirlooms. Most families had them, some did not. Some were simple, like a handkerchief or a ring, others perhaps buildings, businesses or estates, sometimes a title and sometimes animals .However, in this world, there were seven families whose heirlooms were so important that they broke out of the normal expectations and were in their own class.
These heirlooms were so important that they could tear whole countries apart in an effort to protect those who inherited them. They carried enough power to build an empire and ensure that it would not fall for centuries, provided that the other heirloom holders did not interfere.
These heirlooms? An ancient form of magic, extinct except for these seven families. This kind of magic is the reason that they each control an empire. This heirloom granted those who inherited it the ability to hold complete control over one of seven elements- Light, Dark, Earth, Air, Fire, Water and ice. Each heirloom came with a set of gifts which only those who held it could access and it had been this way for centuries.
Each of these gifts was passed down through a different nation's royalty, as was the knowledge of them.
