Serena's POV
"I hope you stay with us like this only. It's fun to have you around."
"Sure"
when we finally pulled up to the curb, and I hopped out of the car, ready to throw a quick 'see ya later' his way, I was caught off-guard. There was Blake, looking all moonstruck and whatnot, his gaze locked on something—or rather, someone—outside my workplace. I mean, the dude's eyes were practically broadcasting a whole telenovela's worth of emotions: tenderness, softness, love, passion, and this undeniable spark of something real.
I've seen Blake in all sorts of moods, but this? This was new. So, I stroll over to him, trying to snap him out of it with a wave of my hand, but nope, he's completely oblivious, just lost in those eyes of his. I can't help but let out a sigh, and then, because I'm me, I whip out my phone and snap a quick pic of him totally drooling over this mystery girl. I'm giggling like a loon, tucking my phone away, when I notice he's still in his little trance. My lips twist in annoyance; I mean, come on, dude.
Deciding enough is enough, I give him a good pinch—a real zinger. "Ouch, what?" he snaps out of it, finally looking at me. "Done staring at her?" I ask, half teasing, half genuinely curious. He gives me this blank look at first, then runs his hand through his glossy hair in frustration before announcing, "I am going!" But I'm not letting him off that easy. "What, wait, you didn't answer me?" I press on. He lets out this big, dramatic sigh, and then drops the bombshell: "I like her." My jaw's on the floor at this point because Blake, the perennial playboy, actually likes someone? Now that's a plot twist.
But then I catch myself, realizing something's up. I glance back at him, and sure enough, he's back to ogling her like some kind of lovesick puppy. "Hi," I say, a little hesitantly, as I place a hand on his shoulder, trying to reel him back to planet Earth.
Blake's POV
I was still staring at her, just kinda rooted to the spot. I couldn't help but gawk at her, the way those ginger-red locks of hers caught the sunlight—it was like they had their own personal spotlight. And her eyes, man, those light brown peepers were like pools of kindness, especially as she was all wrapped up in feeding this scrappy wild cat. She had the little furball cradled in her arm, nuzzling her nose against its head in the most endearing way.
In my head, my heart's going off like a siren, 'She is beautiful,' it's chanting, and I'm just standing there, spellbound since the moment I laid eyes on her.
Just as I'm about to take a step forward, I feel this tap on my shoulder. I spin around, and there's Serena, her lips pressed into this tight line that spells trouble.
"Don't approach her," she says, and I'm like, what? I can feel my temper starting to bubble up, but I squash it down, take a deep breath, and my chest is doing this heaving thing because I'm trying to stay calm.
"Why?" I ask, and Serena's answer is so quiet it's practically a secret. I frown, 'cause I'm not about to let this go', "What are you saying Serena, say it a little louder."
"She has a boyfriend whom she loves a lot. They have been together for 2 years," she finally admits, and it's like I've been sucker-punched. My heart's in shards, I shut my eyes tight, and take a sharp breath. These feelings, I swear, they're like the worst kind of mystery—one I can't solve and don't want to. I spin around, let out this laugh that's as dry as desert sand."It's all right, I am the most handsome guy at our university. I have too many options," I boast, trying to brush off the sting.
I turn back to Serena, slap on this grin that couldn't be more fake if it tried, and throw in a wink for good measure, "Ain't I?"
She gives me this sad smile, nods, and just as I'm about to say something else, I hear it."Serena, is it you?"
My heart? Yeah, it's a goner. I'm suddenly an expert in the art of not breathing. She's walking towards us, and when she smiles at Serena and they hug, I'm thinking, 'Wow, her smile could light up this whole place.'
"I missed you Sere," she says, and the warmth in her voice is just... something else.
"I missed you too, Kat," Serena replies, and they're doing this whole 'how are you' dance, and I'm just standing there, trying to remember how to inhale and exhale.
So there I was, just hanging out at our usual spot when Serena introduced me to her friend, Katherine.
"Hey, Katherine meets Blake Derek. He is my new friend," she said with a grin that practically screamed 'I've got plans.'
'Not a good one, Serena'
I tried to sound cool, but let's be honest, my voice does this weird husky thing when I'm nervous, so I ended up sounding like I'd just finished a marathon when I said, "Hi, I'm Blake Derek." Katherine just smiled and said, "Hi, I am Katherine," with this grace that made her name sound like it should be in lights or something.
I couldn't help myself; I blurted out, "Beautiful people, beautiful name," and mentally facepalmed for sounding like a cheesy novel. But then, oh man, the handshake.
It was like a jolt of electricity when her soft, almost creamy hand touched mine. I'm not even kidding, I felt shivers, and by the look on her face, she did too.
She pulled back like she'd touched a live wire, tucking her hair behind her ear in that nervous way that's just so... I don't know, endearing?
Clearing her throat, Katherine turned to Serena and mentioned something about being on time for work, and just like that, they were planning to bolt. "Yes, let's go. Bye Blake, see you tomorrow," Serena said, her voice trailing off as she practically hauled Katherine away. And me?
I was rooted to the spot, just watching them leave, feeling like I'd just lost my chance at... something.
But then, just as I was about to turn around and try to play it cool, Katherine glanced back. That look, man, it was like a silent movie scene, her eyes meeting mine and my heart deciding it was a great time to audition for a drum solo.
'What was she doing to me?'
'What sort of emotions are you creating inside me, Katherine?' I thought, a little bewildered and a lot hopeful. With that thought spinning in my head, I finally managed to move, walking away with a goofy smile I couldn't shake off. Katherine, I mean, what a name, what a person, and what a day.
Serena's POV
"Serena? "
"That Blake is a bit out there, isn't he?" She just gives me this look, you know, like I'm speaking another language. But I tell her, "Just wait until you get to know him. The guy's a riot, seriously. You'll crack up." Before she can even say anything else, I'm pulling her away, 'cause, hey, we've got a line of customers, and work's not gonna do itself.
