"THIS is too dangerous! You can't risk your life for this." she insisted.Kolvar knew why she was scared. Why everyone was scared of this project. It was dangerous, but he was willing to risk his life to possibly change the course of the blueblood history forever. But nobody seemed to comprehend that.
"I could finally make a breakthrough Laria, just let me use the serum. Unless you're willing to do it yourself." he countered, grabbing the syringe off the lab counter.
This could be history in the making.
Or it could just be another failed lab experiment gone wrong.
Stop overthinking this.
"Kolvar you don't have to do this. We could test it on a golem first, or maybe we could run extra tests on it. You don't have to do this." Laria begged. But she knew damn well that nothing could stop me.
"I do, actually. The king has already put me on probation, but if I can show him that this works, then maybe he'll finally give me the respect I deserve." he brought the tip of the syringe closer to his exposed shoulder.
"And what if it doesn't work. Then what?" she had tears brimming her eyes. She was scared. For me.
"Then you're better off without me. My magic has never been exceptional, anyways. he gave her a small smile, before shutting his eyes and inserting the syringe and its liquid into his skin.
"Kolvar, NO-"
The empty syringe hit the floor with a clink and she flinched at the noise. His limp body fell with it.
She ran over to where his body had fallen on the concrete floor. "Kolvar?! Please be okay. . ." she whispered, her voice wobbly.
Laria froze. The realization hit her like a brick, hard, and painful. He did it. He really did it.
Just then, the grand oak doors were opened, and two castle guards came running in with the kingdom's official mage. They didn't look pleased.
"What's going on? Laria what happened!?" the high mage, Lyon Myster, barked. His eyes trailed from her horrified expression to the young mage on the floor.
"Laria, answer the question!" he ordered, louder.
"It was his idea, Myster. I tried to stop him. . . he's just—" she was cut off by the high mage.
"Bring his body to the infirmary, quickly," he commanded to the guards flanking his side. He then looked back at her. "Laria you need to come with me. Now." he swiftly spun around on his heel and exited the room.
Laria's eyes lingered at the fading figure for a second longer before she let the castle guards take Kolvar. Now it was her turn to go.
o di, quod nunc.
—
HE told her to lie.
"Nobody is to know about Kolvar's findings. Under no circumstance."
Laria wasn't surprised. She knew what Kolvar was doing. Even though it was incredibly dangerous, it was valuable information. If they could find the correct serum, then they could have a chance in the war. Maybe.
Unless a truce is made, the purebloods will slaughter them all. That's what really scared her. The future of Draydon lies in the hands of an idiot tyrant.
The King of Draydon wasn't any more bright than a young child. His tactics and strategies were nothing of a waste of time, money, and lives. Innocent lives.
That's why Kolvar was willing to risk his life for this. Because he knew his life was not worth the tens of thousands dying in combat. He would just be another death. Another number. Another statistic.
And he was eager to do so. Look where it got him.
Idiot, she thought. I should've done more to help him. Appreciate him.
Her thoughts were disrupted by the sound of a nurse calling her name, beckoning her into the hospital room, where Kolvar was struggling to live.
"His condition is not completely stable, but we're trying the best we can." the nurse informed her, leading her around a large curtain that separated Kolvar from the rest of the world.
Then try harder. Laria bit her tongue. She needed to be careful about what she said. Word went around fairly quickly, and if the king found out of her speaking out against them, she would be considered dead.
"L-Laria?" she heard Kolvar's rough voice as they walked towards his bed. Her eyes met with his, and her heart did a double-take. He looked so different.
Laria rushed up to his side. "It's going to be okay, I promise." she held his hand in hers as she let her tears fall.
He's going to be okay.
I hope so.

IT was all over Draydon. Every single paper, those dreadful words were written in bold, black print.
'DISGRACED MAGE GONE MAD. THE KING HAS PLACED AN ORDER TO BE RID OF HIM'
Laria shouldn't have gotten her hopes up. She should've known better, she should've known what the side effects would be. What they would do.
He went insane. After a couple of weeks of recovery, Kolvar began to lose it with the project. Mad rages, and tantrums when frustrated and long nights of testing different spells and runes became his new normal. This wasn't completely unfamiliar behavior, but it all happened so quickly that it was terrifying to her.
So they took him. Right before he could make any new breakthrough. They took him away from his friends and family. They took him away from her.
They silenced him.
In Draydon, anyone who spoke against King Darius would be taken away, to a place no blueblood knew of and would be silenced. Nobody knew exactly what they would do to you, but everyone was certain of one thing — once they took you, you never come back.
He would never come back.
Laria has beaten herself every day since then. Since the day they dragged him away from her.
She remembered his eyes. The fear and horror flashed in them as their eyes met one last time. The last time she ever saw him.
So I'm going to find that spell. I will find that serum. I won't stop until I breathe my last breath on this wretched land.
