                                 Ch.1 The Meeting

I had been moved around from foster home to foster home for as long as I could remember. Now finally, someone wanted to adopt me. The only problem was that I had never met the family before, the only information I had was that it was a single mother with a son in high school. There was a meeting set up for this afternoon to see if I would get adopted. I was anxiously awaiting this meeting. All I ever wanted was a family and that was the only thing I never had. Growing up it was hard to look around at all the other little boys and girls holding hands with their mom and dad while I was all alone. This was my shot at a real family and I was terrified that I was going to find a way to mess it up. When the time finally came for me to seal my fate I walked downstairs into the meeting room. And as soon as I opened the door, all eyes were on me.

“Hi” I said introducing myself and shaking hands with everyone in the room.

The woman seemed very nice, she had a kind look in her eyes and a warm smile. Basically, she was my dream mother. As the meeting began, a child services agent began asking her questions like why she wanted a child, Her job and marital status, housing situation, etc. After a few more questions the child services woman left, saying that he would give us some time to “get to know each other”. After she closed the door we sat in an awkward silence.

“Whats your name again” I asked.

“Anne” she answered, “And yours”

“Spencer” I replied.

“So” I said interrupting the silence, “what do you do”?

“Im a real estate agent” she replied. “How old are you?”

“Ill be 16 in december” I said smiling, knowing that the special day was coming up in a manner of months.

“How exciting! The special day is coming up soon”

I nodded then blurted out, “Do you want me?”

As soon as those words came out of my mouth I regretted it. I put my hand over my mouth to try and contain any other verbal diarrhea that was threatening to spill out.

“Im sorry” I said “I can leave now if you want” I said pointing at the door.

She chuckled softly then said, “You’ll have to do more than that to make me not want you”.

My face lit up, “You want me!” I said holding back tears.

“Well, of course” she said.

I was speechless but I managed to choke out, “Thank you, this is the first time i’ve ever been wanted”, and gave her a hug. After I pulled back from the hug I glanced at her son trying to hide a smile. I bent down and gave him a quick hug. It was the first time I would apart of a real family.
