Meera - part one

" Is that Neer?" My aunt asked my father.

He didn't even bother to turn around....didn't even consider her question. It was as if my twin was gone and never mattered to him.

My mother turned to look at her and gulped the lump of air down. She missed her daughter.

Like I missed my sister.

My parents knew I met her outside our house. They knew I conversed with her and spent my time at her home.

Funny, where I lived with my family had become my house since she left and where she lived had become my home. As ludicrous as it may sound, it felt as if Neer was the only relation that could make my house a home for me.

We were so much more than just sisters. We are twins and, two parts of a soul as the myth went. We were complete opposites yet our music had formed a bond that was unbreakable.

She always was the outspoken one, between us sisters, she would never settle down for something she didn't want. She was the ambitious one, the one who did things till her heart was satisfied and she was content with it. She did everything that she felt like doing and I did everything that family felt I should be doing.

The result?

I was here at this table with my family, smiling and discussing unimportant things while she was there at the other table, satisfied as she always was.

My singing was limited to the walls of my house and for the ears of my close ones. My family didn't agree with me being out there in the industry. They said there was no pride in being someone's source of entertainment, so they didn't agree with me when I said I'd be entering a reality show.

Like the good girl that I was, I settled down with their decision.

My sister, at the age of 26, had won 2 reality shows, had a YouTube channel that was buzzing with followers and did live shows that had a crowd like crazy. She was gonna work as playback singer in Bollywood, was already approached for an upcoming movie where the producer wanted her to sing a song. She was flourishing while I was saving myself, as parents said. For what? I didn't know.

She lives.

I'm stuck.

And sometimes I wonder if the envy I feel is right......justified. She has everything she had wanted, my family didn't even bother her in anyway. My family's burden was off her shoulders and what a great thing that was.

While she was out there, living the way she wanted, my family was looking for suitors for me.

"Meera, meet my son Pranav." A distant relative whose name I didn't know said and I looked up at the guy. This was the reason my parents wanted me to attend every social event there was. To introduce me to guys of our community.

He wasn't good-looking but wasn't a bad sight as well. He had a beard, I didn't like men with beards, his eyes were black and judgemental and his smile was as much confident as his presence was.

"Hi." I said as he made a place for himself at the table beside me. A quick gander at my parents and I knew they were thinking of what a good pair we'd make.
