Flashback

15 years old

Harry

I groan as my alarm goes off signaling another day of being miserable. I yawn and stretch before getting up to shower. The only thing I look foward to today is my date with Lacey. I had finally got the courage to ask her out (with a little help from Riley of course) and now look at where we are. I probably should've taken her advice earlier.

I quickly make my way downstairs to see my mum making breakfast.

"What's all of this?" I ask taking a bite of my apple.

"Gemma told me you have a date." My mum smiles before placing a plate in front of me. I roll my eyes but smile anyway. Damn you Gemma.

"Yeah I do actually." I smirk proudly. I don't think anyone is as shocked as I am though. I finish my food and thank my mum before making my way to the bus.

"You have a date!?" I hear Riley yell. I chuckle and shake my head.

"Don't start." I say smiling. She squeals some more before clapping her hands together and smiling.

"Yes! Do you know how long i've ben wanting you to ask her out!?" She laughs and makes her way to the bathroom so that no one will hear her.

"Actually yes." I nod looking out the bus window.

"Where are you taking her?" Riley asks and I can practically see her biting her nails. It was a nervous habit of hers.

"Dinner and a movie." I shrug like its no big deal. We both know that isn't the case though.

"So...." Riley starts. I frown.

"Yeah?" I reply.

"Is there anything you want to say to me." She smiles brightly. I look around confused.

"No?" I say even though it comes out more like a question. Her face falls and I see her nod. Was there something I was missing? She tells me she needs to get to class and leaves the bathroom. I frown at her sudden change of mood but decide to ignore it.

Riley hasn't responded to me all morning and I'm starting to get worried. She finally lets me see where she's at and I see that Jack is walking up to her.

"Ri hey!" He smiles. She forces a smile and waves. After the dance nothing really happened between the two except they became good friends.

"Happy birthday!" He smiles and hands her a small wrapped box. Shit. I didn't forget her birthday did I? No, I couldn't have.

"Thank you." She says softly. The bell rings and they bid goodbye.

"Shit Riley I'm so sorry." I say. I hear her huff but she doesn't reply.

"Don't be angry please." I beg.

"Whatever, I have to go. Have fun on your date by the way." She frowns and shuts me off. I let out a frustrated groan and punch my locker. How could I be so stupid? Every year for her birthday i'd wake her up by wishing her a 'happy birthday' and we'd spend the whole day together. Just the two of us. Now it looks like that wouldn't be happening. Why do I always fuck everything up?

Riley

"Riley sweetheart?" My mother asks snapping me out of my thoughts.

"Sorry what?" I reply. She sighs sadly and looks down at the cake she'd bought me.

"Oh right." I force a smile and blow the candles out. Every year my dad would make it home just in time for my birthday and Harry would whisper 'make a wish' just as I was about to blow the candles. It was perfect because I had everyone I cared about with me.

My dad had called earlier today saying he couldn't make it and I guess that kind of just ruined everything. I told him it was fine and that i'd be okay but i'm not sure I am. I may have overreacted to Harry forgetting my birthday earlier but in my defense, my day was already going pretty bad.

I quickly excuse myself from the table saying that i'm too tired and make my way upstairs. I make sure the door is locked before letting myself sink to the floor. I was tired of holding all of my emotions inside so I decided to finally let them out.

"Don't cry love." Harry spoke making me jump slightly. I quickly wipe my tears feeling embarrassed that Harry saw my whole break down.

"I'm sorry." We both say at the same time.

"Wait, what are you sorry for?" He asks confused.

"I'm sorry that you had to see me like that and I'm sorry that I overreacted earlier." I sigh and play with the gold charm bracelet Harry had sent me for my birthday last year.

"You still have that?" He asks smiling slightly. I roll my eyes. "Of course I do." I reply smiling down at the charm.

"I'm sorry your dad couldn't make it Riley. I should have been there for you." He whispers and I know he's upset with himself.

"What can you do right?" I chuckle and shrug. He frowns but doesn't say anything.

"So how was the date?" I ask breaking the silence. He starts to laugh and I look up confused.

"What's so funny?"

"Oh god Ri, she was so annoying!" Harry groans. Now it was my turn to laugh.

And so that's how we spend the rest of our night. He continued to tell me about his annoying date and I listened. It helped in the long run because by the end of the night, I wasn't as sad as I was earlier. That's when I realized that I wouldn't know what to do if I didn't have Harry. He was always there for me and I knew that he always would be.

I felt my eyes getting more and more droopy by the minute. We had been talking for hours and I couldn't help but be tired.

"Go to sleep love." Harry whispered reminding me that he was still there. I nod and yawn rolling over on my bed.

"Goodnight Haz." I mutter closing my eyes. I'm almost asleep when I hear Harry speak up again.

"Happy birthday Riley."

"I love you." He whispers and I'm almost positive I wasn't meant to hear him say it.
