(This is set after Lucas's past has been uncovered)
"Lucas? I can't believe you would do that. I thought you were different." Riley said, looking disappointed and rather distraught. "Promise me, you won't be like that again. Promise. I like you how you've been before."
Although Lucas would never admit it, those words hurt him. The past was part of who he was, and he may not be proud of that fact, but he felt gutted that Riley had reacted so strongly.
"I... Promise." Maya looked at him, concern briefly flashing on her face. Riley appeared to not notice, instead showing relief that he'd agreed with her.
"Good, then let's pretend this never happened. We've got to go to class before dad gives us detention, he's already not keen on you."
The day went by slowly for Lucas, almost as if time was enjoying letting him internally torture himself.
Maya's day hadn't been much that much better. She had woken up in a grumpy (Maya is not a morning person) yet not a drastically bad mood, until she looked at the date on her phone.
The day when her father left was always a burden on Maya. Truthfully, she blamed herself. If she had been prettier, kinder, skinnier... If she had been Riley, Maya was sure her dad would never have left.
Although Maya was not in the right mindset for school, she got ready anyway, for Riley. She broke down though, when she saw her reflection. After a long session of self-hate she went to Riley's.
When she saw Riley, her heart lifted. Riley was her sunshine. Riley was everyone's sunshine. Riley, not Maya. Maya, in her mind, was the rain intent on ruining the mood and keeping people from doing what they wanted.
"Are you okay, Maya?"
The question threw her and she opened her mouth to explain, but then she looked at Riley properly. Maya could see it was asked out of politeness rather than genuine concern, Riley had something to say, and Riley wouldn't listen until she'd said it. So instead Maya mumbled an "I'm fine honey, what about you?"
Riley proceeded to gush over seeing Lucas later. Maya could see that Riley had built a pedestal with Lucas on, the perfect guy.
The perfect guy, and the perfect girl. Huh. Figures.
