I woke up at around 7.00am to the sound of my phone ringing. I answered it and heard his voice loudly in my ear, “Hey Lily, you better be up. I’m on my way round now.”
I groaned before saying, “Yeah I’m getting up now.”
“You haven’t forgotten have you?” He asked.
“What that’s it’s the X Factor auditions? No, don’t worry I haven’t.”
“Okay good. I’m nearly at yours so hurry up and get ready. Okay see ya.”
When he hung up, I jumped out of bed and into the shower. I could hear him opening the front door and walking up the stairs as I got out of the shower. I wrapped a towel around me and walked into my room to see my best friend sitting on my bed. His name is George Shelley and we’ve been friends for as long as I remember. We basically grew up together, since our first day of nursery we’ve been inseparable. It’s not like we fancied each other or anything. We are just best friends and I can always be myself and act stupid when I’m around him. He’s like my brother.
When I was ready, me, George and my family walked to the train station where we met George’s family. I could feel myself shaking as we walked to the queue for auditions. Both me and George got a sticker with a number on it. We were both auditioning; not together though. As solo acts. As the day continued, the line got shorter and shorter until finally it came to George. I could see him from the side of the stage as he sang. He was absolutely beautiful when he sang and played guitar. I could see the pure excitement in his eyes when he got 4 yeses. He ran off stage towards me and straight away picked me up and spun me around before whispering “Good luck,” in my ear. I was then guided onto the stage. I was blinded by the lights but in a way it helped because I couldn’t see the huge audience in front of me. I chose to sing Taylor Swifts ‘Sparks Fly’ as it is one of my favourite songs and she is my favourite singer. It was so nerve-wracking singing in front of such a huge audience but it was the happiest I have ever felt. When I was finished, the judges commented one by one. And then they voted... I got 4 yeses! Before I knew it George came running on stage and once again lifted me into the air. Gary then noticed it was George and said, “Do you two know each other?”
“Yes,” I said looking at George, “We’re best friends.” There was a quiet “awww” from the audience which continued when we walked off stage together. Both our families were so proud of us to get through the first stage of the X Factor.
A few months later it was the day of boot camp. I packed a small suitcase and said goodbye to my family before getting in my car and driving to George’s house to pick him up. I knocked on the door and his mum answered it. I sat downstairs talking to her while I waited for George to finish packing. When he came down, we got in the car and drove to the studios where boot camp was shot. The whole weekend was so scary. We spent every minute rehearsing once we were put into groups. I was before George to sing in the first stage. I had to compete with two other girls who were really lovely. Their names are Jess and Mollie and they were quite similar to me. I’m nearly 20, Mollie was 20 a few months ago and Jess was still 19. We like the same music, and we have similar fashion sense. I loved rehearsing with them, and spending so much time with them meant I got to know them very well. Mollie has a boyfriend and Jess doesn’t. We are all in University at the moment but obviously we all want to be professional singers. When we had to go on and sing we realised how badly we each wanted it but after singing came the biggest surprise ever. The judges spoke for a few short minutes before Tulisa said, “Could you girls please sing a few lines in a harmony?” So we did and then the judges all looked at each other smiling. Gary then said, “I’m sorry girls but we feel that alone, your voices aren’t as strong as other contestants but together your voices are beautiful.”
