Chapter One. Dan’s POV
I woke up on the first day of July, and waited for Phil to ask.
I knew he was going to; there had been a little carnival type thing to celebrate the true beginning of summer every year for the past three, and every year he had asked me over and over again if I might consider going. I always said no, for reasons unknown even to myself. It wasn’t like I even had a legitimate reason not to want to go, I just never felt like it, and so I never said yes.
“Dannnnniel,” I heard Phil say in a slightly whiney voice from behind me as I scrolled through Tumblr. “I know you won’t say yes, but I’m going to ask anyways. Come to the stupid carnival. We should go.”
“Phil, just because you’re my best friend doesn’t mean I have to give in and do everything you want me to do-”
“Dan, it’s a carnival. It’ll be fun.”
“Phil, are you even listeni-”
“Dan.”
“Phil. Just shut up and-”
“Dan.”
“Goddamn it Phil, listen for one-”
“Please, Dan, just this once-”
“No!”
“But, please.”
I whirled around in my chair to face him, screech at him, lecture him on the importance of listening to others, but the words died in my throat. He was just looking at me with that face, the one he used when he was going to be really disappointed if you gave him the wrong answer. And he just stared at me with those blue eyes, pout on his face. It was hard for me to believe he was older than me sometimes. He certainly didn’t act like it. I was definitely the more mature of the two of us, even off camera.
I heaved a heavy sigh, knowing I’d never hear then end of it until I said yes. There was no shutting him up this time. “Fine.”
“Thanks, Dan. I cannot believe you actually gave in after two years- years- of me begging, and all it took to make you do that was a little pouty face.” He smiled a little, slapped me on the back of my head. “Come on, we’re going to leave soon- it’s after noon already! Don’t want to waste anymore time!”
“I hate you.”
“Sure you do.” And he skipped out of my room, humming some bad pop song I’d used ironically in a video off key. I fought down a laugh. He was such a lovable idiot. Phil Lester was really the best friend you could ask for. And, you know, if anything happened that would lead to us being more than just best friends… I could deal with that.
Ugh, I thought to myself, reconsidering what I just agreed to using my half-awake brain. You are so done, Daniel, what the fuck have you just gotten yourself into?
