Jharkhand secured the cleanest state award at the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2020 in the category of those under 100 urban local bodies (ULBs). Local hindi news shows that the state also bagged the top position in 2018 and secured the second position in 2019.
Union housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced the award for the fifth annual cleanliness survey of the country at an online ceremony. Total 129 awards were given away in different categories.
Four more ULBs in the state are Jamshedpur, Madhupur, Jugsalai and Khunti and were awarded in different categories by the Union minister of housing and urban affairs in a virtual programme organised for the occasion.
While Jamshedpur, Madhupur and Khunti were acknowledged as the best cities in the country with populations between three to 10 lakhs, 50,000 to one lakh and 25,000 to 50,000 respectively under the citizens' feedback category, Jugsalai in East Singhbhum was awarded as the best city for innovation and best practices in cleanliness drives. Jamshedpur is also accredited as a three-star city by the Union ministry. The Ranchi Municipal Corporation stood at a rank of 30 on the overall survey. State chief secretary Sukhdev Singh along with urban development officials took part in the online award ceremony organised by the Centre. Singh congratulated the urban development department, urban local bodies as well as citizens of the state for the achievements and asked them to continue with their best efforts to make Jharkhand a clean state.
Urban development secretary Vinay Chaubey said: "The results are very encouraging and I congratulate each and every staff member of my department who worked hard round the year. Local Hindi news published I also congratulate the ULBs which have been awarded today in different categories and I am sure that the recognition will inspire us to do better."
This year's cleanliness survey received feedback from a total of 1.87 crore citizens of whom 1.7 crore citizens registered themselves on the Swachhata App to take part in the month-long online survey conducted across the country from January 4. The survey was conducted in 4,242 cities across the country including 41 from Jharkhand and was covered by Local hindi news
