With open eyes

While on a walk

In the park

An old bird landed in front of me

Wise and strong

She peered at me

With knowledge in her eyes

Hello

I said to the bird

Who greeted me with a

Tweet, tweet, tweet

With a smile I asked her to sing

Of happiness and joy

As she began

I closed my eyes

And listened to her sing

Her notes poured out

Of hurt and pain

Lies, heartbreak and deceit

Of desperation

And separation

I opened my eyes horrified

At what had came out

I asked her why

Why would she do such a thing

She surveyed me

With her beautiful black eyes

And began to sing

As I stared into those eyes

She sung of hope

Of beauty

Of love

Of peace and joy

Of harmony

When she finished

She tweet, tweet, tweet

Spread her wings and flew away

Later as I thought about

The powerful majestic bird

And her black wise eyes

I got the message she sung to me

That day in the park

That if love, happiness and self peace

Is what I want

That I have to do it with open eyes

An open heart

An open mind

That if I close my eyes

And close myself off

I will find that

I get none of what I seek

Silently I thanked the old bird

For the lesson I was taught

That very day in the park
