For the little boy, the first year of his stay in school was a wonderful time for discovery and deep thinking. He used to have drowsy feelings and attitude towards books. But this was change by one of excited interest. Amazed, he found out that words were living things to which he could harness the chariot of his dreams.
He learned that words were not merely sounds to produce and said aloudat the school master. Words, he found out, stood for objects in much the same way that his own name stood for himself. When he called friends' name, they came to him. When he mentioned the name of an object, the image of that object suddenly became vivid in his mind. This to the little boy was of course, fascinating enough.
He also discovered that words meant many nice things and made different peculiar sounds when said : some rough, others gentle. He began to think of words as distinct personalities. And as the years rolled on, these words would become clearer to him than the faces of his neighbors.
