THE MOMENT
'05

I was laying on my back, with a Book in my hands. It's what kept me occupied for the past 3 days of my bedrest. I was really lonely. Mom has been taking extra shifts so she could make some extra money for my chemotherapy. I really didn't know if I'll make it, since we don't even have money and I can't ask from Damien. Our friendship is new and already, I'm having problems. My phone vibrated indicating an incoming call. Tossing it over from the side table, I accepted the call.

"Where are you? I've been trying to contact your ass for days"I smiled. "And tell me, why ain't you coming to school? " I sighed.

I haven't told anyone or answered calls from anyone for the past few days. I was totally avoiding them and I couldn't even open the door when Damien came here, banging on it, asking to see me. I didn't have the courage and I really won't tell any of them. The last thing I want is for them to pity me. I just want them to know me as Sandisiwe Ngcobo, not the girl with cancer.

Sighing,"I'm alright Sandy. I'll be coming to school on Monday though" I answered.

"I miss you, can you dm me your address so I could come and check up on you? "She murmured.

I didn't want to see anyone but maybe it's time I assure them that I'm fine. Yes, I have Cancer but my body is all good. No pain, nothing.

Smiling,"I'll send it to you, sure you could come?"I asked thinking back on Peter. I don't want to cause trouble for her.

"I'll come by tomorrow afternoon Sandi, what should I bring?"She simply asked.

"Your sexy self"I giggled and she did too. What I've learnt about Sandi is that her parents are divorced but her Dad remarried. She had 3 siblings, two biological and one a step-sister. She met Peter Three years ago, he has been a sweetheart till now and she wants to be a Social Worker.

"Bye Sands"We hung up. I sighed closing my eyes when I heard a frustrated knock showing that the person has been knocking for a long time.

Getting out of the bed, I stumbled my way downstairs then towards the door. I opened the door only to be met by Damien's face.

"Damien, what are you doing here? Ain't you supposed to be at school?"I asked letting him in.

The past few days, he has been knocking after school. I didn't expect to see him here. He looked at me for a while.

"Why ain't you at school? Sands I've been so worried about you. You don't answer my calls, you don't come to school and you don't want to let me in whenever I come to check up on you"He sadly says then pulled me for a bone crushing hug which caused me to flinch.

I might not be too strong afterall.

"Damien, I'm Okay"He removed himself then took few steps away from me.

"Tell me, what is it?Are you sick or something ? You can tell me anything you know"I nodded to his statement.

I might have known him for a short period of time but I do trust him. After our first encounter, he has been a good friend.

"I was sick but I'll be fine"I told him.

"Cool, Let's go to my place so I could keep you company. I see, you're so bored"He muttered.

I giggled with a nod. I was really bored so I needed to get out of the house. Mom doesn't spend a lot of time with me lately, she's always at work. Taking so many shifts and I actually worried about her. She'll be sick at that manner but my stubborn Mom won't even try to listen to my cancer Self!

"Fine, as long as you promise me big yoghurt. I'm game"I said excitedly.

"No problem then,"I marched back to my bedroom and changed into comfortable and clean clothes before walking downstairs. "We may leave"I smiled.

He smiled back taking my hand as we head out of the car to his car. He was in a BMW this time, a beautiful engine I tell you. We hopped in and he drove off.

"We should go out this weekend, and have fun the whole day of Saturday"He said.

Hesitating "I don't know, I'll have to ask my Mom because I'm supposed to be on a bed rest"He smiled pinching my cheek.

"No problem, you'll let me know when you're available, after asking your Mom ofcourse"He murmured.

"I'll text you tonight"I breath that out as Girls Needs Love-Summer Walker played on the background.

We were engaging in light conversation throughout the drive until it came to a stop. The gold gate opened and he drove in. I'm still amazed by the size of the house, the interior and the expensive smell.

‘‘You really have an amazing house in here’ He smiled down at me and shrugged his shoulders.

‘‘I guess, let's go in’’ Following behind his huge strikes. We made it inside.

He guided me towards a huge room which I assumed its the Cinema by the look of it. While admiring the room which was so beautiful in dark and peach, a smile was plastered across my face.

"There's no one around so we will just watch Movies and oh! We can go down to the kitchen and
prepare some food’’ Damien muttered.

I grinned so happily. There was so much of a positive vibe around this house which actually made me forget a little about my own problems.

Walking out of the Cinema room as Damien promised that we will go back. We cat walked our way downstairs finding a huge open kitchen on the side. Kitchen has
never been my favorite place but I immediately fell in-love with this one.

‘‘Wow, this is so beautiful’’ I excitedly snuggled up his shoulder looking at his face with his 5'8ft tall self.

‘’Can you please adopt me already’’ I jokingly screamed walking
towards and looking at every single material.

‘‘I can do that’’ He chuckled '‘My Parents can, because I am actually adopted'’ I gasped snapping my head his way.

‘‘Lies’’ I said in disbelieve.

Maybe that could the reason behind him being black while he's having an English surname. That means his adopted parents are white. I can't really imagine myself
having white parents. Their standard of living are much different from us, black
people and I find it funny as said in Social Media and few telenovella I have watched like Zone 14,Skeem Saam etc.

‘‘Well that is true, my father died when I was little, about 6 years and Mom is mentally ill’’ He murmured.

He walked over to the fridge, opened and took out a jug of Juice before he walked over to the cabinet, taking out two glasses. I was rooted on my spot trying to process this. I feel so bad for not knowing a single important detail about this boy who I have just befriended. He stood next to me, I don't even know when he did everything but he just handed me a glass of juice.

‘‘You will have a panic attack if you don't get out of the Planet you are currently in’’ I looked up at him before taking the glass to my lips gulping the liquid.

‘‘Y-You just don't seem adopted’’ He chuckled.

‘‘How does an adopted kid look like then?’’ He asked.

I shrugged my ‘‘I don't know, and please don't be offended by my statement’’ I breath out.

‘‘No sweat’’ he took my hand in his as he guided me to a highchair. Frowning, I looked up to him.

‘‘I thought we were making food’’ I stated.

He looked at me and chuckled softy ‘‘Well...you will just watch me preparing food. I am good’’ He winked turning to a certain cabinet.
He took out the ingredients then placed a silver pot on a stove which looked so neat.

What was I even saying? Everything is so clean and neat in this gigantic house. His muscles flexed so simple as he moved up and down the kitchen.

‘‘I hope you ain't checking my ass’’ He loudly shouted turning his head to me. I giggled.

‘‘Oh come on, your ass isn't that interesting’ I mumbled as he threw a dish cloth my way which I caught.

‘‘My ass is interesting lovely, you may ask the girls in school’’ I rolled my eyes.

‘‘Oh yeah, because apparently my friend here is a man whore’’ I sarcastically replied with an eye roll.

‘‘It's not my fault that these girl love my dick’’ He winked again as I made a disgusted face.

‘‘Eeew so gross’’ I threw the dish cloth him and he quickly caught it.

‘‘You are so innocent, I will enjoy corrupting your virgin ears’’ He smiled, walking back to check up on his pot.

When I first met Damien, I really didn't think we would be sitting right in his home preparing food together or better yet be friends. So surprising.

‘‘So do you visit your Mother?’’ I suddenly asked.

He tensed and sighed looking back at me as he leaned towards the kitchen counter.

‘‘Yes, she was admitted 7 years ago and she is not getting any better. We do visit her’’ He answered. I nodded.

"Cool" I smiled at him.

‘‘Yeah, tell me about you. Your family, childhood events and all’’ A frown creeped across my face and I dropped my face looking down.

‘‘My Dad is late, it's just me and My Mom. She is a nurse at a local clinic so...’’ I shrugged my shoulders with a sigh. ‘‘we are surviving, if you know what I mean’’
I took a sip of what I was drinking

‘‘I get you’’

We continued talking as he prepared food. After that we walked upstairs to the Cinema
room and put on The Titanic after some minutes of convincing him that we should watch it. He wanted an Action Movie but I wasn't having any of that.

"I will be downstairs to place back the plates and wash them, the Helpers are not in today’’ With a nod, he walked out of the Cinema room.

I sat there watching the Movie
until I grew tired, telling my self that my butt is itching for me to stand up.

I walked out of the Cinema room to a passage, a hallway to be exact. I found myself lost in a big room then decided to take another turn. I stepped inside a white room then my eyes found a black Piano in the middle of the room. Hesitating, I walked in further to the Piano. It was so beautiful, so black and shiny. I placed my finger on a button and it made a sound.

‘‘I didn't know you are a Pianist Sandisiwe? ’’ I snapped my eyes to the deep voice which found those dark ones. I cleared my throat and shrugged.

"I'm not a Pianist, I just love Piano" I honestly replied.

"Oh well, I can play it for you" He smiled walking towards me, and sat comfortably on the chair next to the Piano and looked up to me ‘‘Which song do you want me to play?’’

Without thinking twice I murmured a 'Halsey- Without Me'

'Tell me how it feels sitting up there
Feeling so high but too far away to hold me
You know I'm the one who put you up there
Name in the sky, does it ever get lonely
Thinking you could live without me
Thinking you could live without me
Baby, I'm the one who put you up there
I don't know why- yeah I don't know'

I don't know how he managed to change his voice within a moment of a second but the sound of his soft voice was something . He finished off the song with me admiring him. He stood up and stepped closer to me, he tilted his head then looked down at me
before he looked up at me again.

‘‘Have dinner with me’’ My stomach reacted, I could swear I placed few butterflies in there.

‘‘I—I—’’ I was lost in words. I didn't know what to say without embarrassing myself. I have never felt this way thus I have never had such an encounter with any guy.

‘‘Just say yes’’ He softly murmured.

‘‘Yes’’ the words escaped my lips before I could even think of anything. I don't even know him that much, God!

He nodded before he stepped out of the room. Blinking, I looked at my shaking hands before I swayed my ass out of the room room. I found Damien on the passage whom
immediately crushed me with a bone hug.

‘‘God where the hell where you!!? I was so worried’’ He shouted.

‘‘Geez Damien where would I disappear to when we are in the house’’ I murmured pulling away from him before he could crush my rib cage.

‘‘You right but damn don't ever do that again’’

‘‘Yeah I wont, I was just lost when I was trying to find my way back to the kitchen’’ I said to him.

‘‘No problem, lets go back to the Cinema room’’ He said as we walked over the hallway
which lead us to the Cinema room.

We watched Movies until it was time for me to head back home. We got inside Damien's car as he drove off to my house. We kept on gossiping and laughing at silly things until we got home.

"I had fun"That was so true. I had the most amazing time with Damien.

He smiled "I'm glad, should I walk you in?"He asked. I shook my head.

"No thanks, I'll manage"He nodded.

I stepped out of the car and he immediately drove off. I smiled softly as I made my way inside the house. A gasp escaped from my lips at the sight my eye landed on.
