Vanessa’s pov.

To be honest, moving here wasn't really what I expected it to be. I thought there would be more girls like me. Who are into sports not pink nail polish and dresses. I sighed as a group of girls walked passed my new house staring at me, laughing. I’m just wearing black chucks, jeans and a shirt. how is that even amusing to them? “This is going to be the worst summer” I mumbled to myself grabbing my last box from our car.

As I made my way to the house, I was walking rather fast. I unexpectedly slipped on leftover mud on the pavement from mom’s planting. I was now on the floor on my side, with my hands on either side of my head. I am an idiot, yes I know. I groaned glancing up to see all my baseball cards, out of the box, sprawled out on the pavement. I sighed, dropping my head down.

“You alright?” a guy asked behind me. romeo? is that you? I thought to myself. idek. I looked behind me, wondering who it was. I first saw a pair of slightly worn out pf flyers, with the laces tied loosely. I pushed myself up on my knees to see one of his tanned, hands holding a tight grasp of a book, index finger roughly holding a baseball glove. while the other hand held his brown jacket. This guy must have the face of a god. I glanced up and my prediction was right. He had a perfect jawline, cute brown hair, with these chocolate brown eyes that could. possibly, vanish the existence of a human being. wtf am i saying. i sound like a stalker.

“I think so, ye” I trailed off, lifting a knee off the ground. attempting to stand. I forgot about the stupid mud tho so i almost slipped. again. But in fait, the god caught me with his arms. “woah, u ok?” he chuckled looking up to me, smiling. the sun was beginning to set behind my house. giving the perfect amount of light to reflect on him. this is too much for me. I'm gonna die.

“ye, i’m good thanks” I smile back. “I’m sorry, it’s just” I paused. I recognise this guy somehow. I shifted my weight to one leg, to look at his sides. I must’ve looked stupid doing that but i think he was the guy from school. at recess i watched that guy hit a home run. I was really impressed to be honest. He was stuck between home and third base. he outrun their throwing but i never actually saw who he was tho.

“are you that guy who hit a homer in baseball, at recess?” I asked, brushing the dirt off my jeans. He looked behind him then looked back at me, slightly licking his lips. “ye uh. He was an easy pitcher” he shrugged, as if it was nothing. “your like. really good tho” i admired him. “nah, I'm no king of crash man. but thanks” he smiled. “I’m Benny” he said, putting his jacket over his shoulder, sticking his hand out. “Vanessa” I introduced myself, grabbing his hand, shaking it then letting go.

“need some help?” He questioned, motioning to the cards that fell.  “oh nah, it’s ok” I turned around and bent down, starting to pick them up one at a time. “no no, I’ll help you” he insisted. bending down next to me and dropping his things. “do you play baseball too?” he asked while gathering up the cards. “ye. my grandfather played baseball so when I was little, I always wanted to be like him. and i guess i never stopped playing from then.” I explained. “I know its not typical for a girl to play baseball” I paused. “But to me, baseball is life” I picked up the last card which was kinda damaged from the mud.

“did any get wrecked?” he asked, flicking through the cards. I sighed. “ye. the best one too. “which one?” “the great bambino. it was my grandfathers. pretty cliche right?” I laughed lightly, flicking off the mud. “what do you mean by cliche?” He replied, turning to me. “oh never mind” I smiled. I shouldn't tell him. I feel like i brag whenever i talk about him.

Benny passed me his pile and I thanked him, placing the cards in the box. “hey uh. would you wanna play baseball with 7 other guys tomorrow?” he asked, as we both stood. “ye sure” “great” he said, picking up his book and glove. “I only live across the street” he pointed to a house across the road. “so I’ll just meet you out here around 9 tomorrow morning” he explained, taking his jacket. “thanks for helping me benny” I smiled, grabbing my box. “anytime” he smiled back. “See you tomorrow” he nodded walking back to his house. I had a solid smile on my face for the rest of that day. he was cute.

“so” Mom started, looking up from her plate of spaghetti. “Made any friends yet?” she asked. “I guess i kinda know one of our neighbours” I stated twirling strings of spaghetti with my fork. “he asked me to play baseball with his friends tomorrow” I smied, looking down. “A boy?” she questioned, raising her brows, grinning. “ye. I guess i dont really get along with most of the girls around here.” I rolled my eyes. “they don't play baseball. and i doubt they even own a pair of chucks” I stated. How can most girls be so into makeup and all those type of girly shit. Just because guys play sports doesn't mean girls can’t. “I’m sure your going to have fun tomorrow vanessa” she smiled. “hope so” I said pushing my chair out and taking my plate to the dishwasher. “Thanks for dinner mom”
