She kissed the cuts and bruises I got when I played outside.
He used to pick me up and spin me around.
She walked me into kindergarten.
He walked me into the sixth grade.
Then she got sick.
He was my dad. She was my mom. Dad used to describe Mom as an angel.
Mom fell down onto the black and white tiled floor as she was cooking one night. I yelled for Dad, and when he came into the kitchen, he carried her to the car. I was terrified.
"Dad! What's wrong with Mom?!"
"Nothing, Sweetie. She's fine."
She was worse. So much worse. She had a week to live. Dad only ever told me that she was 'sick'. I knew it was more than that.
I walked up to the hospital the day before she died. The secret I used to hide - Mom was the first to know it.
"Mom... Are you okay... With a person that likes the same gender..? Like gay people?" I stared down at the floor and played with the hem of my shirt.
"O-Of course I am," Her voice was hoarse. It was getting weaker. She was getting weaker. "Why do you a-ask?"
"Because... I really love you and if something happens to you... I want you to know the biggest secret I've ever had. I'm gay." I didn't like using the word 'lesbian' to describe myself.
"Good for you, Darling. I love you too, Dash."
When I came back the next day, everything fell apart. Dad became a drunk and came home every night at two in the morning. I was scared and would lock Scootaloo, my little sister, and myself in my room.
I didn't think life could get worse. I was wrong.
