Jonas: I'm sorry that I wasted so much time on my questions, sir. But I was only curious about release because my father is releasing a twin today.
Giver: I really wish the community wouldn't do that.
Jonas: Having two identical people around would be really confusing, you see, sir. And I really wish I could watch the release. I want to watch my father making the twin clean and comfy.
Giver: You can watch the release, Jonas.
Jonas: But the Elders never let any children watch, it's much too private.
Giver: Jonas, I know you read your instructions very carefully, you can ask anyone anything you wish to ask.
Jonas: (nods) Yes sir, but-
Giver: Jonas, when you finish your training, you will be the new receiver. You will have access to the books, to the memories......everything. It's part of your training. If you want to watch a release, you just have to ask.
Jonas: (shrugs) Well, maybe I will. But it's much too late, the release happened this morning.
Narrator: The Giver then told Jonas something he had not known.
Giver: All the private ceremonies are recorded in the Hall of Closed Records. Do you want to see this morning's release?
Narrator: Jonas hesitated. He was afraid his father wouldn't like it if he watched something so private.
Giver: I think you should.
Jonas: All right then, tell me how.
Narrator: The Giver rose from his chair, went to the speaker on the wall and clicked the switch from Off to On. {click}
Assistant: (immediately) Yes, Receiver. How may I help you?
Giver: I would like to view this morning's release of the twin.
Assistant: One moment, sir. Thank you for your instructions.
Narrator: Jonas watched the blank screen in the Giver's room flicker to life almost instantly. It flickered with zig-zag lines, some numbers appeared, followed by the date and time. He was astonished and delighted that this was available to him, and surprised that he had not known. Suddenly, he could see a small windowless room, empty except for a bed, a table with some equipment on it; Jonas recognized the scale from the Nurturing Centre- and a cupboard. He could see pale carpeting on the floor.
Jonas : It's just an ordinary room. I thought that they would have it in the Auditorium, so that everyone would come. All the Old go to Ceremonies of Release. But I suppose when it's just a tiny little newborn, they don't bother com-
