Wei Ying's POV

"Welcome to Gusu High School. We hope you will learn as much as possible during the course of the year. We are delighted to welcome you. Do you have questions before we continue the tour?" Lan XiChen asks, smiling warmly at the three of us.

Shijie and Jiang Cheng shake their heads, but I shoot my hand up. "Yes, Wei WuXian?"

"I've heard from friends that have studied here in the past that there are a lot of rules. Is that true? If so, how many are we talking about?" I ask, bouncing on the balls of my feet lightly.

Lan XiChen nods as he speaks. "Yes, that is true. We have 4,000 rules currently in effect."

My eyes widen at the information as I stutter, "T-that many?! W-why?!"

Jiang Cheng laughs under his breath at my expression before shijie smacks his arm gently, reminding him to be polite.

Lan XiChen chuckles as well. "We strive to be as learning oriented as we can possibly be. The rules exist to keep the school from dissolving into absolute chaos. You will grow used to them, I'm sure. There are many, but they are relatively simple and easy to remember. All new students are emailed with a list within their first week here."

I nod mutely, my mind still running a mile a minute. We continue walking until we reach our class.

Lan XiChen bows respectably and gestures to the door. "The principal himself teaches this class. Please have a good day and come to me or my younger brother Lan Wangi if you have any questions."

The three of us nod and bow back. "XieXie." we chorus before I open the door for shijie and Jiang Cheng to go in first.

The first words I hear upon entering are, "You are late. Take a seat and don't disrupt the class."

The harsh tone makes me frown, but shijie and Jiang Cheng hurry to the empty seats indicated. After a moment of hesitation, I follow.

'Reminds me of Madam Yu.' I think, shuddering.

Lan Zhan's POV

Two of the new students from Yunmeng fidget in their seats uncomfortably under the stares of their classmates, but the other, a boy in black and red, looks back at the people staring with a shameless grin and a twinkle in his dark eyes.

I find my eyes drawn to him more than once throughout the lesson, if only because Uncle Qiren takes an almost immediate disliking to him despite the fact that he is not too bad.

Wei WuXian. His name is whispered by girls and boys alike, in desire and awe respectively.

"Wei WuXian! Tell me, how would you solve this equation?" Uncle suddenly asks, his eyes seeming to burn a hole into the grinning and distracted raven-haired boy.

His brother snickers from his seat at the trapped look on Wei WuXian's face.

That look, however, disappears as soon as it had appeared, replaced by a smooth, cocky grin.

And he proceeds to shock the class and Uncle as he rattles off the answer as though he hasn't been talking and sleeping for a majority of the class period.

His eyes sweep the classroom, his smile victorious before his gaze snags on my own. My ears heat up when he gives me a playful wink. I look away quickly and focus on taking notes, forcing my eyes away from the energetic new kid.

The class ends without any further disruptions- thankfully as I'm beginning to become concerned for Uncle's health. I don't believe his face is supposed to be purple- and we all pack up to head to lunch, various cliques bunching up to gossip about the three newest additions to our school.

My lips purse at the breaking of two of the rules- no cliques and no speaking behind other peoples' backs- yet I don't say anything. I cannot control the entire school after all.

"Wei WuXian, I can't believe you have a thick enough face to taunt the principal." an exasperated voice complains off to my left when I enter the hallway.

I look over and see Wei WuXian and his brother, Jiang Cheng, leaning against the wall, a wide, toothy grin on Wei WuXian's face and an irritated glower on Jiang Cheng's.

"You can't? I can't believe I didn't do more, but then again, Principal Lan Qiren reminds me of your mother, A-Cheng." Wei WuXian laughs, shaking his head slightly.

Jiang Cheng grimaces at the comparison, but doesn't otherwise respond. He glances over and catches me watching. "Hello." he says, nodding at me.

I nod back and say, "I hope everyone has been polite to you thus far." I eye Wei WuXian and he chuckles.

"Yes, thank you. You are Lan Wangi, right? Your elder brother mentioned you earlier." he tells me, his lips quirked into a barely there smile.

I nod, my ears reddening beneath my hair. 'Of course he did. Seems he wasn't joking when he said he wanted me to make friends.'

"A-Xian, A-Cheng. We should go eat." Jiang YanLi says coming up behind her two brothers. She notices me and bows gracefully.

I return the gesture and turn on my heels to walk away when a tanned hand grabs my sleeve in a gentle hold.

I stare at the hand with wide eyes and look at its owner in confusion.

"Would you like to eat with us, Lan Zhan?" Wei WuXian asks, his voice as quiet as it will ever be.

Wei...Ying...

I shake my head and hurry in the opposite direction, my heart racing in my chest.

(A/N) I told y'all it would be longer than the first one. I hope you enjoyed it even if Lan Zhan was a tad out of character. 😅
