Everyone is born knowing how to feel things. Cry, laugh, get mad, throw a tantrum, it's instinct. But Izuku for he spent so long trying to be 'fine' that some emotions never really grew with him.
In fact, emotions for him have always been... complicated.
People always thought he was easy to read which is a walking sunshine boy full with big smile, sparkly eyes, the kid who claps when his friends succeed. No one ever paused to think maybe this cheerful kid learned to smile because the alternative hurt too much.
The teachers assumed his life was stable the moment they met Inko. She showed up at the dorm once, soft voice and warm eyes, bringing food like some anime mom final boss of kindness.
And, everyone fell in love instantly. If his mom is that sweet, then surely his life must be sweet too or that's what everyone always thought.
Yeah. Not really. At least, for Izuku in this case.
That morning, the dorm was full of sleepy students gathering for breakfast. Except one. Izuku was still knocked out upstairs, lost in dreamland after crying himself into unconsciousness the night before.
No one dared to wake him and Iida even announced solemnly, that disturbing a resting classmate would be a violation of their "morning peace protocol." So they saved his food in the fridge, a simple Katsuki's katsudon, which said a lot already.
After that naturally all of them just silently gathered in the common room. It wasn't really chilling to be honest, and maybe more like emotional emergency meeting disguised as hanging out.
There's whispered arguments, concerned glances, Sato biting into his burned toast like it betrayed him, Uraraka pacing because emotions are hard even for her.
And, Katsuki just leans in a chair, arms crossed, pretending he doesn't care. He cares. He cares so much it's embarrassing. He's known Izuku since diapers, and sadly even he barely knows anything about the guy's dad.
His own father once muttered something like, "That man's trash," which is saying something, coming from Masaru Bakugo, and also the uncomfortable feeling that something isn't right since he's a kid every time he saw auntie Inko.
As time goes by the chatter gets loud. Advice flies. Opinions clash. Someone suggests forming a protective task force. Someone else suggests cookies. Mina cries because, "he's just so precious??."
Shoto looks ready to adopt and buy him an exclusive toy's figure of All Might with Endeavor money. Kirishima volunteered to punch his dad. And, Bakugo looks stressed, which is rare and mildly terrifying.
And then—
"Uh... morning."
"Oh! Midoriya!" Jirou squeaked, eyes wide. "Uh. How long have you been standing there?"
Midoriya stands at the kitchen door, eating his katsudon like he spawned there. Which he kind of did. He actually watched all of them whisper about him like a nature documentary for a solid ten minutes.
"About ten minutes...I guess" he says, like that's not socially devastating. "Thanks for the katsudon, Kacchan."
Several heads snap toward Bakugo.
"WAIT. How did you know he cooked it?" Kaminari yelps.
Izuku blinks. "Uh... Kacchan cooked a lot for me and my mom since we were little. I know his seasoning. Is that weird?"
Mina shakes her head fast. "Nope! Normal! Totally normal! Cute. A little concerning. But normal."
Momo nodded seriously. "It's like your taste buds are trained for Bakugo cuisine. Fascinating."
