A/N
I'm going to try to stick to the original plot the best I can, but some things are gonna be different. You'll understand what I mean when you read this first chapter. I'm trying my best, please be nice.*3 years later*
Tobio walked through the gym doors at Karasuno high school. Of course, his nerves and anxiety were rapidly shooting around his body. How could he not be nervous? Last time he stepped foot into a new gym, the most traumatic experiences of his life occurred. He tried to shake it off, but the panic was climbing up his body. This would not be a good first impression if he had a panic attack the first time he was meeting his teammates. Looking around, he noticed nobody else in the gym. This was his opportunity to warm up so he wouldn't make a fool of himself in front of everyone.
He picked up a volleyball and started practicing his serve. His nerves began to calm down as his palm connected with the ball. It was a perfect serve. At least, that was what anyone else would think. Tobio had a horrible problem of criticizing every little thing he did. It was torture for him, but he knew no other way. If he wasn't perfect in middle school, he would get hit for every mistake. He learned early on to not make mistakes and if he did, his teammates wouldn't have the opportunity to hit him as he was already beating himself up and cursing at himself under his breath.
After a few more serves, he heard the gym doors burst open. He turned his head and saw what seemed to be a small, orange haired child. The child seemed somewhat familiar, but Tobio couldn't remember. Ever since his first year of middle school, he's had a hard time remembering the most elementary things.
"It's you!" The orange haired child yelled. Tobio looked confused. He didn't know why this kid was addressing him as if he knew him or why he was even in a high school gym in the first place.
"I'm sorry, do I know you shrimp?" Tobio sneered at him. That was another thing that changed. When Tobio did feel like speaking, it was always rude. He refused to come off as week, so he completely changed his personality so nobody would mess with him and keep their distance. It was a flawless defense mechanism.
"You're the King of the Court! You beat my team in my final year of middle school! How do you not remember me?" The shrimp screeched at Tobio. The tall male made a face at him.
"Idiot." Tobio disregarded the small boy and continued his serves, except this time, he messed up. Then all when straight into the net and Tobio was having an inner conflict with himself. Someone else who he has never met was standing to the left of him. If he were to yell at himself, it would look weird to an outsider that knew nothing about him. However, he deserved to beat himself up. He can't make mistakes or he will get beat again. The solution was to take it out on himself when he got home that night. "Damn it."
"That was a serve? Why did you ever get the praise you did in middle school? You look like an amateur," the shrimp poked fun at Tobio. Tobio's mind was racing. Maybe joining the volleyball team here wasn't such a good idea. It was the first day and he was already being made fun of. No matter how high his walls were built, one little word could send him spiraling.
Tobio looked over at the exit and made direct eye contact with the ginger. Tobio's eyes were completely dead and it surprised the ginger. He didn't mean for his words to affect the taller boy and he instantly started regretting what he said. Maybe he should apologize and say he was just joking. However, he wasn't going to get the chance.
Without another word, Tobio called it a day and packed his stuff up. He didn't want to break down in front of a complete stranger. When all of his stuff was packed up, he made a beeline for the exit, running right past the child and little did he know, the entire volleyball team. His eyes made contact with a silver haired boy but he didn't stop. He knew his breakdown was going to hit him full force at any moment and he had to be far away from everyone.
As he approached the bathroom, his chest started feeling tight and his head started hurting. Tears were forming in his eyes and he knew he had to get in and lock himself away before it all came flooding out. He opened the door cautiously and looked around for anyone who might be in the stalls. After he confirmed he was alone, he locked himself in the largest stall and slid down the wall, his breakdown finally hit him and he felt like he could hardly breathe. Tears were streaming down his face and he was gasping for air. He didn't like the way he felt, but there was no out for him. There was only pain and suffering for him and it was all because of some dumb kids that felt bad about themselves and took it out on him. The panic attack was at its peak and Tobio was hugging his knees to his chest while taking deep breaths. When the peak came, he lost all focus and let everything out. Loud sobs broke out from the young boy and his breathing became even more strained. This is the worst one he's had in a while. He was at a loss.
*Hinata's POV*
What in the world happened? He didn't even give me a chance to apologize before he ran out. As I turned around to see where he was going, I saw the rest of the team standing behind me, completely bewildered.
"Hi guys, I'm Hinata Shoyo. I'm joining the volleyball team starting today. I have my club application as well," I introduced myself to the people that were behind me.
"What was that all about? Who was that kid?" The boy with the brown eyes and short dark hair asked me. I scratched the back of my neck and tried to come up with a plausible excuse.
"I have no idea. I walked in the gym and he made eye contact with me and then bolted out," I lied. I knew it was my fault. I was making fun of him and I hit a sore spot without realizing it. I hoped everyone believed me, and they did.
"Oh well, it's nice to meet you Hinata. I'm Sawamura Daichi and I'm the captain of the Karasuno volleyball club. There are three more first years that will be joining us this year. There is a Tsukishima Kei, Yamaguchi Tadashi, and a Kageyama Tobio. I can only assume that Kageyama was the young man that ran out since Tsukishima and Yamaguchi are standing here with us," he explained to me. I looked behind him to see if I could point out the other first years. I couldn't figure it out until a beanstalk looking guy started smirking at me.
"Are you sure what you just said wasn't bullshit Hinata? Are you sure you didn't do something to piss the king off?" The blonde beanstalk glared down at me with a smirk playing on his lips. I glared right back at him.
"Tsukki, be nice. We just got here, we don't want to make enemies," a freckle faced boy put his hand on the blonde's shoulder. So that was Tsukishima?
"Shut up Yamaguchi, just a little bit of playful banter. Isn't that right shrimp?" Tsukishima taunted. My glare was still fixated on him, but I was torn away when a silver haired boy pulled me to the side and walked me into the gym.
"Now now, we don't need any tension during the first day of practice. I'm Sugawara Koushi by the way. I'm the vice captain of the team. You can call me Suga if you want," he smiled brightly at me. "We need to figure out where Kageyama went so we can start the formal introductions. Chemistry between the members of the team is very important to both me and Daichi, so this should be our number one priority."
I agreed with him as well as the team and we all started looking around campus for this Kageyama. It's the first day and I already know there are going to be a lot of problems for us this year.
