MABEL

I look around in fear. Where am I? My feet give up and I fall on my knees on a completely deserted road. Suddenly I hear footsteps approaching my way. I try to stand up but my feet buckle and I fall again.

The footsteps grow closer and the silhouette of a man comes into vision. He is holding a gun in his hand and points it straight towards me.

"Help!" I cry. "Please don't kill me. What have I done to you?" I ask.

His face is completely covered by the darkness surrounding him. He cocks his head to a side and starts laughing. His laugh is not normal. It appears that it has all the evils hidden behind it.

He pulls the trigger and all I could hear was my own loud voice asking him to stop.

I get up from the bed sweating profusely, breaths coming in short and rapid. I look around slowly coming out of the dream. 7 AM, the clock read. Nightmares were not an uncommon occurrence in my not so happy life. But each one felt so real that I woke up shouting and sweating most of the time.

"Mabel are you awake? Come down for breakfast" said Vivian from downstairs.

"Gimme 5 minutes. I'll be there". I got out of the bed and went to the bathroom to freshen up. After finishing my morning routine, I treaded downstairs to eat as my stomach grumbled. I didn't have dinner last night so I was insanely hungry.

As I entered the kitchen, the fresh aroma of coffee and omelet made me weak on my knees so I sat on the table to eat, no, more like pounce on the food.

"You are a goddess Vivian. I could die without you." I said with a mouthful of my favorite breakfast.

"That's right, but what are friends for?" said she with a wink.

I thanked the stars above that I found my best friend Vivian on the very first day of college. She had 'accidentally' spilled her milkshake on a guy who was trying to bully me and we were inseparable since then.

She helped me a lot in adjusting to this new town when I left New York and came to Connecticut. My life was completely altered when my dad disowned me and asked me to leave New York out of nowhere.

My dad, the great Alex Sanders, one of the wealthiest businessmen changed in a day and kicked me out of his house. I thought he loved me but little did I knew what a heartless bastard he was. I cried and begged him to tell me why was he doing so but he completely ignored me. At last, I had to gather all the self-respect I had left and run away. I had only one person to whom I could go to and she was my aunt Lily, my mum's sister who lived in Connecticut.

I decided that night that I will never use his name or money in anything I decide to do in life. My mother had died giving birth to me and my father became a complete stranger all of a sudden and I was now officially an orphan with bare minimum money that I had saved during my internships in my first year of college. I needed a job and I needed it urgently.

"College starts in 20 minutes, get your ass up and go get ready," says Vivian already ready in her floral tank top, denim shorts, and strappy heels. She was always the one for fashion.

I quickly get into the shower, clean up, and put on a baggy sweatshirt with tight jeans and sneakers. I grab my pack and head towards the garage, Vivian already starting up the engine.

I considered myself lucky enough to get admission this late at the university. I was the captain of my university basketball team while in New York which helped me get admission through sports quota. I was majoring in psychology whereas Vivian was still undecided between Sculpture and painting. It is not her fault she is amazing in both.

We reached the college gates just on time and ran like crazy towards our respective classrooms to avoid getting late. My first period, Behavioral Sciences, oh great!
