ALEX
Today was his eleventh birthday. It was also the day he was supposed to receive his letter from Hogwarts.
And the day his mother died.
"She drowned in a river," the muggles all said. But Alex knew it was something else.
He knew deep down that it wasn't true. His mother could not have died from something so mundane.
That day was Alex's worst day ever. The sobs were never ending, as his father held him tightly. The two of them cried until sundown. Later did he realize that his letter from Hogwarts didn't arrive.
It was meant to, surely.
As a half-blood, his mother always told him that one day a letter would be waiting for him, accepting him into the prestigious Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He would visit the school with her. They would go on trips to Hogsmede, where his mother would let him pick out one magical treat from Honeydukes. He waited the rest of the night for the letter, the last connection to his mother.
But it wasn't there.
That same day, his best friend and next door neighbour Eleanor, received her letter. The next morning, she ran over to Alex's house pounding on the front door.
"Alex, did yours arrive?!" she said chirpily, her honey-gold hair dazzling in the sunlight.
"No," his lips formed a thin line and the bags under his eyes had worsened.
"That's strange...Mine did." She gave him a sad, apologetic smile.
Months before his mother's death, Eleanor had been acting strange towards Alex. He didn't know what was wrong, and he only assumed it was puberty. That's what all the adults said.
"Are we still going to be friends when you're at Hogwarts and I'm not?" Alex's eleven-year-old voice asked.
"Yeah, sure. It might be a little hard to stay in contact though."
"What do you mean?" he was close to tears at this point. First, his mother's death-- still a very large and open wound, yet to be healed. Second, Eleanor. She was being all weird, like she didn't want to be there and talk to him which made him confused.
Why won't she be normal to me?
Why is she acting strange and like she doesn't want to know me?
Alex couldn't help but replay those thoughts constantly throughout the next few days. The one, most prominent thought though, was the question he'd ask himself for weeks after.
Why didn't my letter arrive?
