"Hah! Okaay... I get it. This is a joke, right?" I say laughing. Aunt Megan's face doesn't change. I feel my face turn red and I get really hot.
"No. I'm not joking," she says. I fall onto the couch, still laughing.
"Okay, you are really bad at lying. You couldn't even pick something believable? You chose 'You're a mermaid.'" I say laughing.
"No not a mermaid. A Water Elemental," she says.
"Oh okay!" I say mocking her. She rolls her eyes and stomps to the kitchen. She grabs a big bowl from the cabinet and turns on the sink. What is she doing?
She fills the bowl up with water and turns the sink off before coming back over to me. She holds the bowl under one arm and grabs my hands with the other. She lays my hands flat like she was going to hand me something and then holds the bowl with both hands again. She holds the bowl over my hands.
"Catch."
Before I can process anything she turns the bowl over onto my hands. What the-
Except the water doesn't fall to the floor. It stays. The water comes out of the bowl but it doesn't fall. It's there. Floating. Above my hands. I don't move. What the hell...
"How... how am I..." I stutter. Aunt Megan scoops up the water with the bowl and I put my hands down. My hands aren't even wet.
"Cora... you are a Water Elemental. You come from a long line of them. That necklace you're wearing belonged to your mother. It's been passed down for generations." I hold the crystal between my fingers.
"I don't understand how this is happening... how did I do that?" I ask nervously.
"It's in you. It's always been in there. You can manipulate water. Not only that but you have tremendous power. Your mother is royalty, meaning you have some powers that none of the other Water Elementals have..." she says softly but enthusiastically.
"Others? There are more... how do you know all of this?" I say. She leads me back to the couch and we sit down. My head hurts. How the hell did I do that? Am I dreaming?
"I used to be one. Most Elementals grow up as elementals. Every Elemental gets to choose a path when they turn eighteen. They can either choose to stay an Elemental and live among the rest in Setaria. Or they can choose to live a simple life as a human. However, royalty doesn't have a choice. They have to stay an Elemental so they can have children and pass it on to them. Your mother wanted to protect you. So she gave you to me. Nobody in Setaria knows Hali has a daughter. Except for Reese."
"Reese? Is he one of them?" I ask.
"Yes, but he is a Fire Elemental. He is very dangerous to Water Elementals. I met him a few years ago. He said that he has never used his powers on Earth," she says. "But I don't know a lot about him. You should ask him." That must be why he smiled when he saw me breathing underwater. I really was breathing.
"Wait. You mean I learn all of this and... I'm what... supposed to go to school like none of this ever happened?" I ask. My voice squeaks.
"Well, you have a decision to make. You can either go to school in Setaria and learn how to be an Elemental or you can stay here, give up your powers, and nothing will change..." she says.
"Wait, wait. I don't understand. How come Reese is here? If he is an Elemental, why does he go to school here?"
"You should talk to Reese. He can help you make a decision better than I can," she stands up and helps me stand.
"Why do I have to choose right now?" I ask.
"Because if you choose to go to Setaria, you have to go before Monday. I was going to have this conversation later with you but... I don't know I guess I am just scared. "
