"You know doing reckless shit, smoking cigarettes, and dressing like a 'hipster' doesn't mean you're living life to the fullest."
"No, but doing shit for yourself and living every day like it's your last does and I myself think I'm doing a mighty fine job."
Both Sam and Noah agree that being eighteen sucks. They are legally adults and therefore allowed to do whatever they want, yet they trapped by the premise that they have to graduate high school.
According to Noah, there's only two ways to survive on this hot mess we call a planet: pretend to be someone you're not, conform, or take a stand for who you truly are, rebel. Neither of those options seem feasible to Sam, so she stands in the inbetween, and those inbetweeners are the ones who everyone looks down upon for not having their shit together.
Noah, on the other hand, rebels against the social system and couldn't care less about following rules, which has always made Sam a little unsteady. After all, as his best friend Sam's only job is to protect Noah from himself and all of the idiotic thoughts in his green-haired head.
Somehow, Noah convinces Sam to go on an adventure in which she will create her life outside of the inbetween. After they embark, Noah discovers the electronic cigarette and they decide that they don't care if the term "socially acceptable" applies to them or not as long as they're living the lives they want.
